To think about, a provocative look at the animals surrounding us.
I grew up in central Illinois, where the roads run long, flat and straight across a vast plain of open farmland. In this setting, prairie wildlife and cars can easily avoid one another. When I moved to Westchester, just north of NYC, I was overcome by the number of animal fatalities on the winding wooded roadways. The simple gesture of photographing their remains became an act of witness, a way to register the diminishing wildness in our world, and the impetus to my work with animals.
Living, dead, domesticated, or wild, my work focuses on animals and their encounters with human civilization. I look beyond the physical to the multidimensional, and emotional bodies of these sentient beings, and see their grace, beauty, and benevolence of spirit as indistinguishable from ourselves. The animal is not lesser, but rather possesses faculties far beyond our comprehension.
My attuned senses to my subjects breeds a deep internal dialogue; with simplicity and openness, I aspire to create imagery that provokes deep consideration.
