Related: About this forumI received a stainless steel cookware set for Christmas
This one, to be precise: https://www.amazon.com/Cuisinart-MCP-12N-Multiclad-Stainless-12-Piece/dp/B009JXPS6U/ref=sr_1_1_sspa
And I'm loving them!! At 66, I've never had a full set of anything and what I had was mostly some iteration of Teflon coated pots and pans.
I had purchased a carbon steel frying pan, but it was heavy enough that I found myself avoiding it.
My favorite dish so far.... French Onion Soup!!! With lots of glorious fond!!!
Kinda fun to walk into the kitchen and just smile at the shiny pans.

(26,260 posts)I've been cooking with Revere Ware and cast iron for ages. They simply do not wear out.

(3,709 posts)I have been cooking with them for ages too. I kept hoping they would wear out, and they won't. It seems silly to replace them, so I keep polishing the copper!

(5,831 posts)and that was almost 69 years ago. The handle is a bit scruffy because dishwashers are hard on Bakelite.
I have many other Revere Ware pots as well as Corningware.
Here's a link for buying Revere Ware parts. I bought handles for Dutch ovens.

(61,694 posts)New handles. Most of my pots have the aluminum pad on the bottom for better heat distribution, but the handles are getting worn out. Only one of my dutch ovens has stainless steel handles. I even have a double boiler.
Sometimes I have to scrub a little harder if I don't mind the stove properly, but I've never had to throw any of these pots away. About once a year I'll use some lime-away on them so I don't get a build-up.
Siwsan
(26,260 posts)That was a bit of a surprise to find because it was for a medium size sauce pan.
The one piece I don't have is a Dutch Oven. I do have one from a sort of 'knock off' stainless steel set but I generally use the cast iron Dutch Oven because it can go from stove top to oven. The only down side is, it's so heavy that it's hard for me to lift so I can transfer left overs to a storage dish.

(3,741 posts)at least as old are still working so well for us. That info for handle replacement is very helpful, thanks. I was thinking if the handle fell off I would still cook with them because they need replacing ... never thought they could be replaced since so old.

I do not think the bottom is as heavy as the ones which came along later. I think her set was from the 40s

(70,088 posts)along the way, i grab them in thrift shops. i have about 20, from sandwich size to cub scout troop size. try to never walk by them. esp if they had a lid, tho i have one of almost every one of those, too.

(5,517 posts)I "accidently" bought an All-Clad pot at a yard sale years back for $1 and checked it out on the 'net. That pot sells for $150. Since then I am on the lookout for All-Clad at yard sales/estate sales and have collected about $3000 worth for around $200. My husband did get me the large soup kettle for Christmas a few years ago at retail price. He did find the lasagna pan ($150. retail) at an estate sale and paid $3. I love how they cook and have hung them on a wall rack in my kitchen. I also just smile at the shiny pans. Happy New Year.

(2,429 posts)I started the morning with coffee at my desk, decided to organize my recipes and user manuals for kitchen appliances. How I ended up cleaning all the drawers and cabinets in the kitchen, breakfast, and dining rooms is a mystery. And the recipes and user manuals are still sitting, disorganized as ever on my desk. But now that I've finally had something to eat at noon, I guess I'll resume my project. Happy New Year, all!
an all-clad for $1! I bought a large large skillet because my 14 inch cast iron was just getting too heavy to deal with on a frequent basis and I totally fell in love so got a second smaller one. but I had to "save up" for both of them. they are pricey as hell but still worth it if you cook a lot. who would sell these at a yard sale for so little?
MOMFUDSKI
(5,517 posts)at an estate sale few years back. The woman's uncle had hooked up with a rich girlfriend and they both died so the woman put them out for sale either no knowing their value or wasn't a cook. Just got lucky.

(12,157 posts)Stainless steel cookware is notorious for heating inconsistently. These have an inner core of aluminum which does a better job. But have an exterior in and out is a big plus. Our stainless cookware has a layer of bare aluminum on the bottoms. It is hard to clean discoloration from the gas flames.
Have fun creating.
Wicked Blue
(5,831 posts)That sometimes works.

(12,157 posts)The stainless steel cookware is relegated to soups and rice. We don't spend much time at the range any longer.

(36,827 posts)Start the onions as usual, but put them in a 350F oven for 30 minutes, stir, then back in the oven for 20 minutes, stir, then stir every 10 minutes until they are done.

(6,360 posts)Honestly, after all I read about people burning stuff with stainless steel, I had my gas burner turned as low as I could go without shutting it off! I set a timer for every 15 minutes to check and never came close to burning them. I pulled them after about an hour and a half, but probably would have benefitted from at least another half hour. But I was hungry!!

(11,581 posts)Cast iron pans are wonderful, too. We have all stainless and cast iron cookware--no aluminum. Even the bakeware.

(71 posts)I got a set of new stainless pans several years ago (my first new complete set of pans in 45 yrs.) I didnt use them for a month because they were so new and shiny. Have fun with yours.

(2,429 posts)I've been thinking about adding to my collection. I bought 2 non-stick All-Clad skillets this fall and love them, but the whole set is a real investment. My hubby bought me 2 new Wusthof knives and a knife block for Christmas. I've got little cuts all over me, but I sure do love them. Guess you and I need to cook more now, eh? Let me know how you like your pots and pans after you get them seasoned.
blaze
(6,360 posts)I *did* season the carbon steel pans I got a while back (and don't use because they're so heavy) but I don't think I'll bother seasoning these. I think the biggest trick is using a lower flame than I'm accustomed to.
I cooked an over easy egg in butter and only needed to nudge it with a silicon spatula before I flipped it.

(33,575 posts)We bought it with our Obama check.
It is fantasic cookware. Just use Bon Ami or Softscrub when you need to clean stuck on food. Though it usually cleans great just with soap or the dishwasher.
We later bought this pasta insert for the large pot. Love just lifting the past out instead of pouring.

(7,486 posts)I also use a Coffee Gater, a pour-over brewer that's just glass and stainless steel. No filters, no plastic. I use filtered water and fresh ground beans, makes the best coffee ever.

(3,567 posts)It is generally much better for cooking but cleanup can take a few minutes if you burn something. I grew up with the thin, cheap, non-stick pans and they there is a big difference. I won't go back. Barkeepers Friend is very helpful with stainless.
It is also nice to be able to brown meat and then put the pan in the oven.
They will last forever and you will never need another set. If they get difficult to clean just spray them with oven cleaner and put them in the oven for a few minutes.
I have never needed to season stainless like cast iron pans. It is possible to season stainless and it is a much faster 1 step process.

(25,816 posts)I used cast iron for frying, but the Revere stuff for most everything else.
As good as that stuff is, it hasn't made me a better cook, something I'm still working on.
Jeannie won't eat what I cook, so that gives me a lot of leeway to use whatever my imagination
thinks would be good.

Still look like new. I use a couple as decor, hanging from a stainless steel bar at the end of one counter.
Happy cooking.
