Related: About this forumWhat's for Dinner ~ Saturday Oct 6th
We have leftover roast from the crock pot that Bill will make hash with when he gets in from work, and I will probably make garlic bread and roast a pan of veggies for myself. I may have dinner with our neighbor though...he's a great guy, leans Republican, and I'd love to hear what he thought about the debate.
What's for dinner where you are?

(22,133 posts)We are having calzones (with provolone and sliced tomatoes) and a salad.

(146,218 posts)She smears the pizza dough with a good amount of bail pesto, then puts layers of cheese, tomatoes, pepperoni, roasted red peppers and whatever else you might have on hand, rolls it up and bakes. Then she serves it with "red gravy" (a new orleans term for tomato based sauce).
Very similar to a calzone and very good.
Enjoy~

(31,170 posts)Sounds sooo good!
Dinner plans fell through.
It has been really wet and cold here today, definitely a day to hibernate.

(12,253 posts)Organic Ground beef, carrots, celery, corn, peas, lima beans, onion (whatever else I find-perhaps I'll roast my lone poblano and chop that to perk it up a bit. I'll boil, rice, and mash some russets with goats milk for the topping, then I'll layer it all in a filo crust, potatoes on top, paint it with melted butter and bake for about 25 minutes @ 350 degrees. At the same time, I'll chop up my one apple and one pear, add some dried blueberries and make a couple of tarts in my muffin tin, making use of the thawed filo.
Enjoy your evening, Lucinda! I haven't met any Republicans yet who are enthusiastic about Rmoney. I live in liberal NY, so that's not a surprise. May all your surprises tonight be nice ones!

(12,253 posts)Homey and satisfying. The filo pastry added a bit of crunch when it first came out of the oven, but I think that it was overwhelmed by gravy because the crunch didn't stay. I didn't roast the poblano, btw, but added mushrooms instead. We did a very rare thing last night--we both went back for seconds! Have a great Sunday!

(146,218 posts)My husband is from England and it likes it simple. Meat, peas and carrots on the bottom. Mashed potatoes in the middle. Cheese on the top.
But I bet he would like yours better.
yellerpup
(12,253 posts)really depends on the gravy, and the gravy was flavorful in last night's experiment. I don't think I'll make a shepherds pie with filo again because it doesn't show off the pastry, which rather was overcome by too much liquid (gravy) in the mix. The flavors of the meat and veg were really deep and well developed. It tasted good but the extra fussing over the filo wasn't really worth it. I think that I need to cook my filling fairly dry before spreading it on filo. There was some crunch in the first bites out of the oven, but the pastry quickly turned soggy on the plate.

(146,218 posts)I once made a very juicy shepherds pie, which slid off the oven shelf while I was removing it and right onto the floor.
It was a true tragedy.
yellerpup
(12,253 posts)And the gravy seems to have absorbed back into the meat. I have enough left over for 2 lunches later in the week and two servings in the freezer.
Losing a shepherds pie is a tragedy, especially when you lose a juicy one. Still better to lose a pie than bear a burn scar. Sleep well and sweet dreams.
Lucinda
(31,170 posts)I napped instead - which I needed! Didn't sleep last night.
How did dinner turn out? It sounds great!

(12,253 posts)That is time well spent, Lucinca. Dinner was both a hit and a miss. It tasted great but the pastry didn't perform as I wanted. Not the pastry's fault, of course, I overwhelmed it with gravy. Happy to have leftovers today! Feel good, feel better!

Hope it came out well!

(3,744 posts)My butcher recommended it and he is never wrong. I think it was the best batch of chili I have ever made.

(31,170 posts)I have enough trouble with the basic proteins. Occasionally I get grossed out and stop eating meat again for a while.
Not totally vegetarian though, I usually go ovo-lacto with some fish.

(50,130 posts)It's college football day! From 1-3 my favorite radio jazz program, then a lull, then my beloved Ducks game.
Got leftovers, got onion dip and chips (I only allow myself to eat some chips on game day), got pickles and cheeses, got V-8.
Making my last batch of bread and butter pickles this afternoon. Took my last quart to family gathering yesterday; gone!

Maybe I will get him to make it while we are over here.

(146,218 posts)That put a crimp in my plan to get a whole lot of errands today and go out to eat tonight.
So we are going to scrape out the bottom of the fridge. I want it nearly empty when I bring the groceries on board.
As an aside, I have decided to do a major purge while we are in port. Already filled 3 large trash bags with old linens, towels and clothes that somebody needs and I don't.
In the meantime, HE has discovered a treasure trove of dock boxes on slips about to be replaced that are full of crap we do not need....
and HE is scavenging.

(146,218 posts)We need to free up some space. I told him nothing comes on the boat until a whole lot of stuff goes off, but I'm spitting in the wind.
We are waiting for a friend to jump the car. It's ok. It does this every time we leave for a few month and we probably just need to buy a new battery.

(175,729 posts)I'd leave it on the dock, too.

(106,886 posts)12 bags, boxes, whatever. They pick it up. I did a purge and it was great. Remembered I had a neatly configured walk in closet in the bungalow that I could actually walk in. Go figure.
Enjoy your time on shore.

(29,098 posts)I saute ground turkey with lots of black pepper, salt and a hit of red pepper flakes. I add a shallot, a chopped tomato and enough shredded cabbage to fill the pan. Cover and let it cook until it's all mushy. Sometimes I add sliced peppers but I didn't have any today. It's like stuffed cabbage in a bowl.
Lucinda
(31,170 posts)looks absolutely awful.
Bacon, potato, onion and cabbage in ours.
AND butter.
Absolutely awful for you, but delicious.
Saute chopped bacon and cook until starting to brown, add sliced onions and potatoes and toss in the bacon fat, season with garlic powder, salt and pepper, and then add shredded cabbage (not too thin or it all cooks away). Put on a cover and let it steam/simmer for a few minutes while preheating the oven to 375-400 (depending on which of us is cooking)
Take off lid, season cabbage with S&P and garlic powder, then toss, add bits of butter to the top, re-cover the skillet and pop in the oven for 35-ish minutes (maybe longer if Bill is cooking it) and then take cover off and let it cook until the potato edges start to brown a bit.
(The bacon is already done, so all you are really using the oven for, is to finish off the potatoes and cook down the cabbage a bit more.)
That sounds so good !! I'm going to go to the grocery store and get everything so I can try it!!
Lucinda
(31,170 posts)It sounds too good not to like it !
