(9,791 posts)I like them with mayo slathered on the warm toasted bread after you take them off the griddle. There's nothing better.

(9,992 posts)I did break down yesterday and buy some Kumatoes at the grocery store.

I'd never heard of them before, but they looked pretty and worth trying. And they were.
Sliced them and drizzled with balsamic, olive oil, a tiny bit of sugar and S&P. Marinated in the fridge for 20 minutes. Really tasty.
Will be trying tomato sandwiches today. Cold... too bloody hot here to fire up the stove.
Paid a little over $3 for six plum-size tomatoes, so not a bad stop-gap until mine are ready.

(47,675 posts)Get the little 1/2" fresh mozarrela (fuck it - can't figure out how to spell it) balls. Mix the cherry tomatoes with the cheese balls, fresh basil, balsamic vinegar, olive oil, no sugar or salt, some freshly cracked black pepper, and a touch of merlot. Let it sit in the fridge for an hour and then try to avoid eating it all in one sitting.
It makes a wicked filling for an omelet by the way. I've got three grown daughters and one of their boyfriends (Army) in the house. That shit does NOT last long.

(9,992 posts)looks the most like the Kumato, though the Black Cherry is a much tarter tomato.
I've copied and saved your recipe. Thinking about requesting that omelet for my upcoming birthday breakfast.
My Sungolds and Yellow Cherries (that were supposed to be PEARS, but aren't!) are ripening now and the Wild Cherries aren't far behind. The Black Cherries seem to take the longest to get going every year, but they produce well into September.

(47,675 posts)My middle daughter can eat half a bush worth of cherry tomatoes in the time it takes her to harvest the other half of the ripe ones. She does the same with the strawberry bed.

(10,133 posts)Happens every year - we don't get the really hot weather the tomatoes and peppers like until early fall. But I'm waiting patiently (ok, maybe not too patiently) and looking forward to the first ones from the warmer inland areas at the farmers' market.

It's a great recipe if one has lots of tomatoes. One can use whatever cheese they like, rather than the Swiss called for in the recipe. With the Italian herbs in it, I prefer an Italian blend of cheeses, with some good, melty mozzerella. I usually substitute onions for the shallots, too.
I haven't tried it, but I can see a Mexican/Southwestern-style version using cheddar and jack cheeses and some chopped fresh chiles. You could even substitute chorizo for the bacon.

(39,961 posts)Everyone in my family loves mayonnaise and I can't stand it, much less with tomatoes. I know you have intense fans, because nearly everyone in my family loves those. Bleh.

(51,666 posts)A REAL grilled cheese sandwich (a la Mom) is: Wonder Bread, Velveeta, margarine (she never used butter). And only ever dunked in Heinz catsup.
You'll forgive me if I enjoy it in my memories only. I don't allow ANY of those items in my home.

side note: My GI doc says I should stay away from tomatoes. Most of the time I do, but not when I get home grown ones!
