Any hominy/posole enthusiasts here? A question.

Is frozen pre-cooked hominy a viable substitute for canned hominy?

Any special treatment I have to give it before cooking?

I ask because a little while back I made a hominy/green chile/bacon casserole (with canned hominy) and it was so good I just couldn't get enough of it. But canned hominy just ain't that easy to come by. The frozen variety is available, though, but I'm a little leery.

Thanks.

I can always find it in cans at my local stores. It’s usually with canned vegetables. I’ve never seen it frozen before, but I imagine it would be the same as any other frozen vegetable which can be interchanged with canned.

Might be a good idea to thaw the hominy before using in the recipe. Posole is the bomb.

After thawing, can I use it like canned, or do I have to cook it before use in a recipe?

Worked great later for my next batch of posole. So now when I go to the Mexican grocery to buy hominy, I buy the big can, use what I need and freeze the remainder. Saves $$$

Hominy at the standard grocery is rather expensive. Much less so at the local Mexican market. Tortillas are better, too 😁

They also have cans of just hominy, which I’m going to assume is also at my Kroger, but I don’t know that for sure.

ETA: You can order Juanita’s hominy online from Target.

needs to be cooked. I usually start with stock/water and boil posole until tender before adding what ever it is that I am going for.

I have seen plenty of fresh nixtamal with is basically hominy, but I never thought to use it as "hominy" even in posole. isn't that funny? I buy the big cans of Juanitas as mentioned above in the Mexican section of any grocery around here.
