Substitution question

can I use plain yogurt in place of sour cream in a sour cream cake recipe?

3. What's the fat content of the yogurt?

Most yogurt at the store is low fat. That wouldn't match the fat in the sour cream. I don't know if that would be a problem, but I'd worry about it. Also, how much sour cream does i call for? If it's a small amount, I wouldn't worry.

Reminds me of a co-worker, years ago, who says he made a French Silk Pie using the recipe I gave him but it didnít turn out like mine did.

When questioned, he admitted to substituting liquid chocolate for real chocolate, margarine for butter, and whipped topping for whipped cream. What he made was not French Silk Pie.

Maybe you can make a Yogurt Cake instead.

5. Maybe - what's the purpose of the sour cream?

If the main rising agent is baking soda, and the sour cream is there to provide acidity, yes, you should be able to substitute it with yogurt. The result may be a bit tarter. Experiment, and let us know!
