8. A friend said the Battle of the Bulge was the coldest he had ever been.
A friend said the Battle of the Bulge was the coldest he had ever been.
He was from NC. He thought the war would be over in a couple of weeks when he went to boot camp. He parachuted over Normandy on D Day. 101st ------------------------ My uncle was captured in the Battle of the Bulge. 5 or 8 months as a POW. Said they ate cattle beets. |

5. So was my father.
He was with the motor pool under Patton. I think it was the 553rd. Mostly he rode around in a tank.

7. Dad would would have 110 last
January. Was in the Cavalry Recon that got trapped behind the lines. Was told to hold a road with Germans coming down it for as long as possible with only one large gun. Went to a reunion with him years ago and more guys came up to thank him for getting them all out alive. He was a Captain. He held the road until they started to take small arms fire. Then burn their equipment and escaped on foot cross country.
So glad I could drive him that reunion and hear all the stories he never told us. |

12. That's quite a story.
My father was a staff sergeant who turned down an offer to go to OCS when he enlisted in January of 1942. He was told that he would have to serve extra time in the Army which he did not want to do.
He'd be 113 next November. |

14. Dad stayed in being in the Arkansas
National Gard next. His unit ended up being the only outfit called up for Korea.
He went to OCS in Texas with Ronald Reagan and he never liked him. Used his benefits to go back to school and get his PHD. Retire Professor Emeritus with an Endowment Chair in his name. |

15. My mother was pregnant with my older sister when he left for Europe.
He was 33 at the time and his job was waiting for him. My mother would have hated being a military wife.
Your father got the full benefits of the GI Bill, even if it meant going to Korea. Kudos to him. |
