Found a George Taft who lived in Chicago

We had him listed as John Doe in the Manitowoc Evergreen cemetery. Found the obituary for him in case anyone is looking for George.

George Taft, a Chicago youth, employed as a fireman on the tug Lindrup
was lost overboard at Two Rivers Sunday night when the tug was entering
the harbor after a trip from Milwaukee. Taft had been “off duty” and was
aroused upon arrival at Two Rivers. He became confused and fell from the
rail into the lake. The unfortunate man was 23 years of age and was a
new hand on the Lindrup. The body was not recovered.

Another Floater From The Lake
Boys on the lake Sunday discovered a “floater” which was later recovered
by the police and is believed to be the body of George Taft, a Chicago
man who was lost overboard from the tug Lindrup outside of Two Rivers
harbor May 5th. Taft had been employed on the tug one day when he met
with the accident. The body was not recovered at the time although
search was made. Chicago aurthorities have been notified. The burial
took place Tuesday at the county’s expense.

1. We decided not to put the death record

with George Taft because of the age difference in the record and obituary.
Believe it or not, the death record could belong to another person. There were a lot of drownings in the area back then. There are 3 large rivers and Lake Michigan and every year they took their toll.

Although the death record does say the person is in Evergreen, it still may be a different person than George Taft.
