Unfortunately all my dear friends, I am back in the hospital again.

I seemed to have acquired a fairly serious bilateral pneumonia. I suppose being immune suppressed both from cancer and chemo and having my body have to fight more than one problem - makes things significantly worse.

For those who know what it means - my O2 sat is running about 84% even on 50% O2 mask which I hope will change soon. I have legally declared myself DNR/DNI. So their are limitation on how far things will be pushed if push comes to shove. I am at peace with this. Since I have worked as an intensive care respiratory therapist for more than 34 years - I guess I am in a better than average position to judge the long term realities. And the reality is that no one really knows how things will go. Anyway, again I thank everyone for their messages, their prayers and messages of hope and support. ..... doug

2. I wish things were better for you, Doug...

But I am glad that you are aware of the situation and can rationally deal with it. DNR/DNI are definitely the way to go. I used to work in an intensive care unit so I know just what you're talking about. I was an RN then.

7. Thinking of you

There are no good answers for some of our situations. The DNI/DNR is up to you but I have the same philosophy as well. Please post back, and - if you want - PM me and I'll try to check up on a regular basis.

Hoping for the best (fingers crossed)

8. I thank everyone from the bottom of my heart for all their kind words, prayers and thoughts.

Let me say, I think I probably will pull out of this crisis. I am even feeling a little bit better right now. I certainly am not giving up - I am only trying to be realistic and realistically, I think I will pull out of this crisis situation. But, whether now or some other time in the near or distant future things go the other way - I will depart in peace and in gratitude.

9. Wishing you the best, I know that sometimes the disease itself is not what gets someone but the ...

associated complications, you seem to have a good understanding of what might be in store. Still we wish you that you pull through and can have some happy memories. Those memories can be short or they can be long.

I hope you have many years of memories.

He was known by so many here.
Is there a thread somewhere you could point us to?

This is so sad

19. I know you, too, are sick Omaha Steve.

I want to say now, before it is too late, what a wonderful DU'er you are. I always read your posts, and I hold you in such high esteem. Your wisdom and insight on so many subjects command my respect. I am in awe of your bravery and your matter-of-fact attitude regarding your illness and what it means. You are truly incredible.

When you do pass, I am sure I will shed a tear of sorrow for a person I never personally met and the family and friends he left behind. I already know that whatever I post in your obituary thread, it will seem so inadequate; because, sometimes, words fail. The entire DU community will be in mourning, and there will be a tremendous void where there once was Omaha Steve.

I am praying for a miracle, and I am sending you and your loved ones peace and strength in the months ahead.

He seemed full of optimism, not that means anything physically, but it makes it more of a shock.

Thinking of you, Doug.

Strength to his family and friends.
