"Yesterday" on DVD

I just watched the DVD of the 2019 movie "Yesterday" and I must heartily recommend it. Yes, I'm a Beatles fan, since I was a kid, and their music is a well I go to, and drink deeply from, when I find myself in times of trouble. But this movie is not just fan porn—it's a classic hero's journey that Joseph Campbell would have enjoyed as an English musician of Indian descent suffers a bicycle accident when the world inexplicably goes dark for 12 seconds. After he recovers he quickly learns that he may be the only person in the world who remembers The Beatles. This has obvious benefits for him, and he is inexorably pulled into the world of rock stardom, but he ultimately discovers, in one of the movie's most charming scenes, that he truly is on a mission.

Himesh Patel as the hero gives a pitch-perfect performance, and some just plain lovely renditions of the Fab Four's classics. He is well supported by Lily James as his longtime best friend who feels she is "in the wrong category," Kate Mckinnon as the manager-from-hell, singer Ed Sheeran playing a fictional version of himself (who makes the dumbest lyric change in musical history), and an ensemble of wonderful English actors as his family and friends and fans. Director Danny Boyle took a big risk with such a pre-sold, high-concept story but it paid off in a contemplation of honesty and duty that's fast, funny and sweet. But I must warn you, If you are a Beatles fan, you'll be in tears by the end of this movie. Yeah, yeah, yeah, you will.

Not a great movie, but a very good one for the right audience.
And the deeper message, the hero's journey is just right.
