Grace & Frankie is the greatest !!!!
I'd been meaning to watch the show for awhile now and just finished watching all the seasons over a 2-week period. It was SO great to see all these actors I haven't seen enough of lately! Lilly, Jane, Martin & Sam, and guest stars like: Craig T Nelson; Sam Elliott; Marsha Mason, Swoosie Kurtz, Peter Gallagher, etc. It's just been so nice seeing them all on this awesome show. And I really want beach house like theirs!
The show is touching and funny! So funny in fact that while watching the last episode of S1, I was in an airport watching on my tablet, and was laughing so hard I cried and cried and laughed- and couldn't stop. When I looked up all kinds of people were looking over, but I didn't care. I needed a good belly laugh like that!
And Frankie sorta reminds me of the way the writers originally wanted Elka to be on Hot in Cleveland (a pot smoking free spirit, but Betty White balked at that So the role was changed). She is such a hoot! Or should I say "hooter"?!
The cast is fantastic and so are the guest stars. What I luv the most is that at 53, I'm not so fearful of being 73 anymore! These days are truly The Golden Age of Television! And I am glad.

(4,483 posts)because I'm an old lady who should love this show, and I cannot stand it. I adore Lily Tomlin on it, but I just want to slap Jane Fonda, mostly for her neck scarves and popped collars. I am a shallow person.

(42,770 posts)Stopped watching out if boredom. Think both over act. And script way too formulated and characters way too stereotypical.

(4,483 posts)if only from joy at seeing those two women working. Boredom and overacting definitely played a part for me, too, but those damn collars of Jane's are what popped my cork.

(12,155 posts)You would be welcome to the group that calls her Hanoi Jane. I personally like both women and don't worry about what they wear.

Gosh.
Because I don't like her style of dress. Wow.

(12,155 posts)There are actors who are really great at their craft and some people dismiss them because of nothing to do with their talent. I know this is a non apology apology- I am sorry for being harsh but I really feel strongly about the subject and this person in particular.

(4,483 posts)My best friend was with Jane Fonda on her FTA trip to NVN and was there when she sat on the anti-aircraft gun. I'm a little too touchy about Hanoi Jane.
I admire Jane Fonda for a lot of things. I am appalled that she let us (by which I mean the women of her generation) down by having all the plastic surgery after leading us to believe that diet and exercise were what was keeping her looking so good. I kind of feel entitled to judge her on her looks. But you're right--it's shallow.

(20,146 posts)Jane is 80 and looks good for 80. But Lily Tomlin is 79 and as far as I can tell hasn't had PS. Does Jane look younger or better than Lily? To me Jane just looks more high maintenance - the cosmetics, the false eyelashes, the wigs/hair pieces.
So all that extra work, for what? I think she must suffer from low self esteem. When I'm 80, I hope to be more comfortable in my own skin.

(4,483 posts)When she was married to Roger Vadim (he directed her in Barbarella) and she was very young, a teenager I think, he was very critical of everything about her body. If you've seen Barbarella, she's in a skin-tight catsuit for the whole movie, so any imperfection would be hard to hide (esp. in those old days without CGI). And of course her whole childhood was spent among actors, notoriously shallow and absorbed in their looks, so she really never had a chance.
My attitude toward her should be more pity and compassion, I know, but she really did lie over and over about how she would never have plastic surgery and that she maintained her perfect body through exercise and diet. So many flabby women in the 70s believed her and subsequently wondered what was wrong with them, that they couldn't achieve the same results. It was kind of a mind-fuck on Jane's part. She helped perpetuate her own low self-esteem through the thousands of women whose self-esteem she damaged.
I think Lily Tomlin is gorgeous. I think Jane Fonda looks plastic and a little ridiculous for her age--Cher is the same way. I adore her, and she was beautiful--still is, if she'd let herself be--but the mask that her face has become is a little frightening.
For the record, I'm 71 and I treasure my many wrinkles and age spots and even my saggy body. It's all evidence of the fun I've had living my life and I would never want to lose my souvenirs.

(20,146 posts)Her dad wanted to divorce her mother so he could marry his 21 year old mistress when
Jane was 12. Her mother cut her own throat. Jane was told her mother died of a heart attack, but she found out it was suicide a year later. I don't know how a child deals with that!

(18 posts)I like the show. I love the friendship between Frankie & Grace. Jane Fonda was recently on The Stephanie Miller radio show. She said her & Lilly were going door to door canvasing for the Democrats. Both working actively behind the scenes.

(15,533 posts)Love, love, love this show. And yes, who wouldn't want to live in that beach house? Let's not forget how funny the two guys are also.
When watching it I kept asking myself who was I more like - Frankie or Grace? I came to the conclusion that my personality is more Frankie but on the outside most people would think I was more Grace. So, I'm a combination. Then I'd ask myself, who would I want to hang with the most and it was definitely Frankie.
Since I'm closer in age to them than you are, I've been following these two gutsy ladies since I was a teenager and I still adore both of them and what they stand for and what they've done for women's causes.
