Anyone watching Ratched on Netflix?
Just found out about it. I dunno... it sounds like just milking the Cuckoo's Nest premise, but I may be wrong.
OTOH, Sarah Paulson is probably great in the role.

(11,574 posts)The filming is great. Costumes, sets, all as good as Mrs Maisel.

(12,910 posts)All beautifully done in vibrant colors like the old Douglas Sirk movies, including the gigantic office of the head of the asylum, which looks like a TWA VIP lounge. Tthe music is so derivative of Bernard Herrmann I expected Tony Perkins in a wig and a knife to appear. Some performances are good, especially Judy Davis as Nurse Bucket, who embodies all the frustrations of a working woman making it on her own but still committed to finding a husband in a time of suffocating patriarchy. But Amanda Plummer is wasted as a quirky, aging jazz baby and Paulson just does her usual cold but vulnerable menacing act. The whole thing is full of pretty colors, gratuitous grotesques, mindless direction and shoehorned social relevance, like the Netflix series Hollywood. What was most disappointing, though, is the pedestrian dialogue, some of which is so awkwardly expository you could follow the plot with the video turned off.
Visually Ratched is gorgeous. The next motel I stay at must overlook the beautiful sea.
I just finished last night and I did enjoy the series overall - Ryan Murphy has his quirks but I like a little quirk in my life. I agree about Judy Davis and her performance. I also liked Cynthia Nixon and Finn Wittrock. Paulson has been better in other roles, but she did hold her own here and I could see her getting some award recognition.
SPOILER:
I hated when one of my favorite, although minor, characters was killed. Hated it. It just seemed unnecessary and I thought what an interesting character and storyline could have been written for Hank if there was another season. His short story broke my heart.

(10,402 posts)I enjoyed it; but upon reflection, it was really campy IMHO. The performances were good, just some real unwell people.
Peace!

(2,133 posts)along with (of course) the magnificent Sarah Paulson and Cynthia Nixon were extraordinary in their roles!!!
But I do agree, it should have been an AHS 9.5 story!
Magnificently made...

(717 posts)The costumes and sets were great, loved just looking at it. As for the story it was what I call bubble gum for the brain.

(33,643 posts)Budget I would imagine.
Acting, sets, and costumes are the stars, the story is just okay.
But if it HAD been AHS, it would've been one of the better ones ... not as good as season 1 & 2 but at least as good as any of the others.
Well, maybe not Season 8 (Apocalypse) that one was pretty great too, almost as good as 1&2.
