MMR vaccine does not cause autism, another study confirms

Updated 0141 GMT (0941 HKT) March 5, 2019

(CNN) — The measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine does not increase the risk of autism and does not trigger autism in children who are at risk, according to a new study of over 650,000 children.

Researchers used a population registry to evaluate whether the MMR vaccine increased the risk of autism in children born in Denmark between 1999 and 2010. A total of 657,461 children were followed through August 2013, with the researchers documenting diagnoses of autism spectrum disorder as well as known risk factors including age of the parents, diagnosis of autism in a sibling, preterm birth and low weight at birth.

Over 95% of the children received the MMR vaccine, and 6,517 were diagnosed with autism. The MMR vaccine did not increase the risk of autism in children who were not considered at risk for the disorder and did not trigger it in those who were, according to the study, published Monday in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine.

"This idea that vaccines cause autism is still around and is still getting a lot of exposure in social media," noted Anders Hviid, lead study author and senior investigator at Statens Serum Institut in Denmark.

With anti-vaccine groups becoming more vocal and even celebrities and politicians spreading fear of vaccines, Hviid and his team wanted to provide solid scientific answers.

i have seen a couple of studies lately that rely on registries like this to do medical research.
i was super excited when i found out that a big part of the goal of the electronic medical records portion of the aca was done to facilitate just this kind of research.

medicine has gotten so complex, the population so large, that we really dont suss out the full impact of meds until they get out into the population. until then the possible interactions between different meds, different co-occuring conditions, different genetics, are just so complicated that we just dont know what could happen, and we havent been looking hard enough.
2 cases-
2 years ago i had to have a major rebuild of my rotator cuff. i had an unusual tear in the tendon connecting the bicep. they usually tear on the muscle end, but mine tore on the bone end. several other tears to the connective tissue in the girdle.
nobody could tell me why this happened. i had never really had a job w the kind of repetitive motion or unusual strain that typically caused this kind of damage.
about a year later, i had a uti. went to my pcp. she perused my history to see what other antibiotics i had used in the past.
the doc was considering cipro, which i had taken once. she said that it had been tied to later tendon "blow outs". was that what caused mine? no way to tell.

my bil had hep c. no dx for many years, then he started having liver related problems. he got into some clinical trials, one of which was for harvoni.
it worked perfectly, cleared the virus and cleared the way for a transplant. finally a decade of worry was lifted and life was good.
8 years later he went in for a routine hip replacement. a week later he dropped dead of a massive heart attack.
major arterial blockage. he should have had a cardiac work up, but didnt. turns out there was a warning w the drug now, that wasnt known then, that there was a big cardiac risk.
they didnt know. the doc should have.

w all the peeps out there on biologics, peeps getting stem cell transplants it adds up to major mucking w human biology.
for a lot of people it is a choice between a big risk and a horrible disease or death. i know which one i would pick, but we gotta stop shootin in the dark here.
