'It happens like a bolt out of the blue. One minute youre fine, and the next you begin to sweat as crippling cramps move wavelike through your belly. You vomit or have diarrhea, or both, fearing you wont live to see another day.
And then it goes away. Youre back to your old self, maybe after a day or two of binge-watching Netflix and chasing dry crackers with ginger ale.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates this scenario, known as an acute gastrointestinal event, happens to all of us at least once a year. The bouts, while extremely unpleasant, usually dont occasion a trip to the doctor or require any medication.
But such events tend to make us spin our gears trying to pinpoint what made us so miserably sick. While its hard to know for sure, there are clues that might help you determine the source and reduce your risk in the future.'>>>

Haven't gotten it since my mom passed away. She was in assisted living where it went around at least annually I'd get it from contact with Mom if she'd just had it or was getting it. Major ugh.

(13,485 posts)from Jimmy Johns. They had to shut it down along with several other Jimmy Johns stores. We had to boil our clothes and bedding. Talking about a nightmare. That was the worst for us. It's a RW corp. but didn't know that then. Wish we had as we would never have gone there to begin with.

(16,377 posts)A few years ago I was the unit clerk at rehab/LTC center and I got noro. That virus is so contagious that you can get it from breathing the air if someone recently vomited in the vicinity. Plus, it so successfully mutates, you can get it more than once a year. And it's not just the N/V that so bad, it's the achiness, worse than the flu.

(13,485 posts)I was so surprized how contagous it was. When the doc told us to boil our stuff so we wouldn't get it again and again it was a lesson in the unpredictability of viruses.
