I have been researching longevity (probably because I realized that I am an aging athlete) and I came across this site. Im pretty skeptical about a lot of the longevity stuff that I read because it looks like snake oil. It looks like this site is trying to be objective. What do you all think?

(68,644 posts)I don't see any quackery or attempts to sell a single item, which is very rare.
My only complaint is that it seems pretty limited, or new, maybe they just began?

(23,156 posts)But there are some things that are good ideas. Personally, I gave up sugar drinks a couple of decades ago. I also try to eat fresh foods that I mostly prepare myself. But I do occasionally eat other stuff.
It's my opinion that there is no magical formula that will make anyone live forever. You need to do a certain number of sensible things, the very first of which is: don't smoke. Eat sensibly, get a reasonable amount of exercise, and enjoy life. I honestly don't think that there's anything out there that will prolong life a whole lot. Just my opinion.

People who obsess about long life by taking supplements are likely doing more harm than good. The human body, like all lifeforms, is exquisitely crafted by evolution to thrive and live long in a variety of environments.
But we all die. If one wants to live a long life all one needs to do is eat a diverse diet, get exercise, and do not smoke tobacco.
Anything else is likely not worth the effort, let alone the cost, often considerable, especially considering the cost.
Plus, overwhelming research indicates that the best putative treatment is to enjoy life.
That is the best of all prescriptions, no matter how long one lives. Likely anything else is woo-woo.

(119 posts)Nobody gets out alive, thats funny, I like it. I dont think the idea is to live forever, that would be snake oil. I think a reasonable expectation is to live a vibrant productive life to late eighties or early nineties then drop dead or at least have a rapid decline over the last year or so. The problem that most Americans face is that the last ten to twenty years of their lives are a slow decline which is not the same for the rest of the industrialized world (G8).
As far as overall live expectancy, I think it was Bill Clinton who said that the first person to live to 135 is alive today. Here's an interesting video from WSJ.

(40,416 posts)That's the most encouraging observation.
But I hear people like Ray Kurzweil and I have to cringe. He's one of those who takes huge doses of vitamins and other supplements thinking it will help him live longer (forever?). There is no science to support that, AFAIK.
Good response.
Thanks.
Best regards.

For someone who self-righteously attacks most unorthodox treatments that enable people to "enjoy life" as they see fit, this statement by you is disingenuous (bullshit).
But go ahead and live your life according to the dictates of "science". If it works out you can have the last laugh. Meanwhile....

(90,061 posts)If you are just looking for things to try, I suppose it's OK, but I'd take it with a grain of salt, all of it.

(90,061 posts)It could be commercial, it could be some guys attempt to make some money on the web by being useful. The ideas are generic, not wrong that I can see, but not new or unusual either. I'm just saying I'd not put much faith in it, not that they are wrong or fake.
