But he didn’t want to be questioned!

But he didn’t want to be questioned!

By Jill on 5.24.2012

Good news, criminals: You can sexually assault someone, get caught, decide you simply don’t feel like being questioned right at this moment and then walk free. Or at least those are the rules the NYPD plays by:

New details have emerged about a 22 year-old woman who was attacked yesterday morning around 5:30AM by a Hispanic male in his 40s. CBS New York reports that the woman was returning home from her job at a Manhattan night club when she exited the 4th Avenue/9th Street F/G station. As she walked on 16th Street between 4th and 5th Avenues she noticed a man was following her, but thought that she’d shaken him. Soon after, the man jumped at and groped her. Neighbors heard the young woman scream, and as they ran outside, the assailant fled. He didn’t get far though — a neighbor cornered him on Prospect Ave and 3rd Ave.

According to both CBS and NY1, the assailant was detained by police for about 15 minutes before being released.

“I was just (beep) off that the cops didn’t do anything about the guy,” Donald Harrington, a neighbor, told NY1. “They came up here, I told them where the girl was and they just kept on going. They said they had no victim even though we call them back. We took the girl down we spoke to the police and they said the guy didn’t want to be questioned so they let him go.”

Police returned to the scene on Wednesday to speak with neighbors and check out security footage.

Yet if you're smoking a joint anywhere in Manhattan, expect to spend a looooong time in jail. Warren DeMontague May 2012 #4

The WAVE OF SEXUAL ASSAULTS that occurred in and around Park Slope last summer left our community feeling uneasy and, well, pissed. Attacks were happening left and right, yet assailants weren't being caught.

14TH SEXUAL ATTACK SINCE MARCH: WTF

Last night around 10PM a woman in her 20's was walking her dog on 17th street near 7th avenue when she was approached from behind. The man claimed her had a knife and then forcefully groped her. As it has been the case with nearly every other attack, she screamed and he fled. It's pretty fucking scary to think that these pervs won't hesitate to attack a woman walking a large dog -- the victim owns a German shepherd mix.

In related news, Adolpho Martinez, who was arrested on Wednesday in the Monday attack of an 18 year-old woman in Sunset Park, is BEING HELD WITHOUT BAIL pending a psychiatric evaluation. Though he was arrested in 2007 for groping a woman in Chinatown, he hasn't been charged with any additional Brooklyn attacks.

Police say that Adolfo Martinez, a 26-year-old Sunset Park resident, confessed to fondling an 18-year-old woman on Tuesday — allegedly solving one of the 13 sex attacks that have terrorized the area since March.

Of the 13 known attacks, one resulted in a rape.

...

Deputy Inspector Raul Pintos, commanding officer of the 72nd Precinct, said that plainclothes cops would continue to patrol Sunset Park, Windsor Terrace and South Slope to catch the sex fiends.

“There’s more than one perp in these attacks,” Pintos said. “We’re vocal about asking people to report things to give us fresh information. We don’t want to squander any opportunity to catch these men.”

That last line is ironic but there seems to be more to this story. I just read that the victim wasn't present when the police arrived

But all the groups expressed concern about initial reports about how the responding officers from the 72nd precinct first handled the attack on Wednesday, which authorities said they are investigating.

According to officers of the 72nd precinct, the victim was not at the scene when police arrived. The person who called 911 said they knew where the victim was and that they would bring her to the police.

The cops reported that they left the scene after waiting "for some time," but were called back a little while later by the same caller. However, the victim was still not present. The officers left again and no arrests have been made.

Safe Slope said that they are also upset about the alleged actions of the police:

“We are glad to hear that the perpetrator ran away when she screamed and that a number of neighbors came to her aide, but we are once again disappointed in the police's response to sexual assault,” Silk said.

“I have a problem. I get these little urges,” said Martinez during questioning four years ago, according to DNAInfo, a website. That report said that Martinez told cops that he never goes further than grabbing women

Seriously? WTF.

The good news is that there are citizen organizations there trying to protect women from this.
