Or perhaps it's not falling for the argument, as much as supporting it merely because the argument conveniently serves OTHER agenda points, as well. "Politics makes strange bedfellows."

Trying to think of a good analogy - it's kind of like how war profiteers helped fuel popular anger with Iraq after 9/11 by either asking why Saddam didn't condemn the attacks, or else showed footage purporting to be street celebrations among the average Iraqi.
