by Michael Stone
Claiming that being gay is a choice like drug abuse, the senior pastor for a megachurch in Tennessee says that gays must be put to death because God commands it.
Last Sunday, Brainerd Baptist Church Senior Pastor Robby Gallaty told his large congregation that Christians should never stop discriminating against homosexuals, claiming that gays could choose to be straight if they only accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.
Gallaty explained why gays should be put to death:
God said that the sins of the people had infected the very land in which they live. So what happens to people who engage in this activity, this sexual immoral activity? Go to Leviticus 20, God gives us the punishment for engaging in these sins If a man sleeps with a man as with a woman, they have both committed a detestable thing. They must be put to death. And their blood is on their own hands.
Pastor Gallaty tried to justify his Biblically inspired hatred for gays and lesbians by repeatedly trying to argue that being gay is a choice, and some sort of rebellion against his imaginary Gods divine plan.

Shall we put them all to death, "Pastor?" Perhaps you yourself have even "lusted in your heart" on seeing a beautiful woman enter your church on her husband's arm. Or borne false witness. Or been contentious. We know you've been judgmental. Ready to be executed? How do you feel about stoning then? Very biblical!

People who don't live down here have no idea how prevalent bigotry is, it's not just accepted, it's expected.

(2,093 posts)Exactly.
I have tried to explain to people who are not from Indiana that the hatred here is pervasive and casual. The majority here do not consider themselves bigots, most would be shocked and offended if you suggested it. But they hold these views, and consider them not up for debate because they're "facts."

They can mock me and call me any name they like but I draw the line at hate speech, whether it's directed at LGBT people or calling the POTUS a "monkey" (they claimed that their omission of the word 'porch' proves they're not racist).
I almost never go to bf's family gatherings because of it, I'm sure they're just as glad I stay at home.
Chellee
(2,093 posts)Because "monkey" could be construed to be complimentary. Sure.
Part of the problem on the right is the echo chamber that they live in. They cannot conceive of anyone disagreeing with them because they only talk to each other. Of course, this is hard to remedy because decent people get alternately furious and nauseated talking to them.

Your pastor is despicable - how Christian is it to call for the death of another Human Being? .
I hope I never have to go to Tennessee. We were planning a trip to Memphis in a year or two - probably would have spent $3000 to $5000 in your economy - not any more.
We will go spend our money in an area with true compassion - San Francisco or Seattle or New York or New Orleans or Austin.

(7,627 posts)not many of his congregants will be left alive. I am left asking myself whether such extreme speech is protected by the first amendment or does this fall in the category of terroristic threats and incitement to violence ? What if some unhinged church goer decide to act upon it ?
Imagine if this man was an Imam and said something along these lines. You can bet that it would be front page news and the RW would be yelling about Sharia law and the like.
This pastor should be investigated by the FBI.

(11,085 posts)But a righteous Christian preacher man? He just gets an "AMEN" and a "HALLELUJAH." And since those gays are such sinners, don't forget to burn their cattle.
And don't forget Deuteronomy chapter 13:
12: If you hear it said about one of the towns the LORD your God is giving you to live in 13 that wicked men have arisen among you and have led the people of their town astray, saying, "Let us go and worship other gods" (gods you have not known), 14 then you must inquire, probe and investigate it thoroughly. And if it is true and it has been proved that this detestable thing has been done among you, 15 you must certainly put to the sword all who live in that town. Destroy it completely, both its people and its livestock.
Kill everybody in the town, not just the wicked men, EVERYBODY. And don't forget the livestock! Those sinful, sinful livestock. (I also like that verse 12 isn't even a full sentence.)

Due to his desire to lead his family and his church well, Robby is not able to accept all of the invitations he receives. He has a team made up of leaders in the church who pray over each request and decide which requests he should accept. This team has identified certain parameters that guide their decision-making, including the following:
In order to protect his time at Brainerd Baptist, Robby seldom speaks on Sundays.
In order to maximize his time away from home and the church, Robby prioritizes larger events where pastors and/or church leaders are present from multiple churches. It is difficult to be away from home for more than a couple of days.
In order to protect his ministry, it is the position of both the Senior Pastor and leaders of the church that Robby not be asked to travel alone (either his wife, Kandi, or a member of the Brainerd Baptist Church leadership team will accompany him).

(57,349 posts)CHATTANOOGA Ten years ago, Robby Gallaty would have laughed if anyone told him he would be serving as senior pastor of a growing church in Tennessee and would have completed his doctor of philosophy degree from New Orleans (La.) Baptist Theological Seminary.
But that is exactly what has happened to the Louisiana native who just a decade ago sold drugs and had an addiction himself.
Gallaty, now senior pastor of Brainerd Baptist Church, was selling cocaine and heroin in New Orleans and making a ton of money. I thought I was on top of the world, he recalled.

(23,156 posts)which part of the "Thou Shalt Not Kill" commandment is he having trouble understanding.
One Jewish friend of mine tells me that the original Hebrew is even more direct and says simply, "No kill".
I am constantly amazed at how many supposedly Bible-believing, Torah believing, Koran believing, folks think that there are all sorts of exceptions to that commandment.

(3,384 posts)What they do is, sell a product, salvation, which costs absolutely nothing to make and sell it to gullible people looking for answers that science can't entirely explain. Religious organizations have grown and profited through history by assimilating many cultures and traditions to spread it's viral poison of guilt or shame, selfishness and eternal life in Heaven, Garden Of The Gods, or Valhalla, or Elysian Fields, or The Cedar Forest or the Happy Hunting Ground, or, Stovokor...
Martin Luther formed a new church because the Pope was corruptly selling slices of Heaven known as "indulgences". The Pope was on the take from both poor and wealthy supporters.
Heaven? Now that is one big, eternal entitlement!
If I believe in God, then I am entitled to a cushy life in Heaven forever.

.. pointed out, the article misrepresents what this dangerous "Pastor" actually said:
The article, and its headline, use language strongly suggests that this "Pastor" is indeed advocating death for gays.
The video appears to be edited in such a way as to omit the "Pastors" discussion of his view (as dangerous and flawed as it is) that such action applied to a different time: If you listen to the video, at approximately 1:44 there is an edit. This occurs just after the "Pastor" refers to "God's stance in the Old Testament". After the edit, the video breaks to a discussion of Paul's views as expressed in I Corinthians 6. If one listens to the remainder of the video, it is clear that the "Pastor's' views are not what is represented is the headline, and that the omitted portion probable contained his (misguided) attempt to rationalize what he views as "Old Testament law" (which the "Pastor" then feels free to selectively & whimsically apply to the present as he chooses).
What this "Pastor" is doing in promoting his detestable views is indeed dangerous.
He deserves be exposed for many things, including his selective use (and non-use) of Old Testament documents to condemn what he chooses (while ignoring prohibitions regarding the wearing of garments consisting of mixed fibers, the interbreeding of different stains of cattle, the advocacy of stoning of rebellious children, and the punishment of intercourse with a female slave which calls for whipping the female slave, but not her death, since she was not free and still owned.)
There is no need to overstate the "Pastor's" harmful views in order to expose him for the dangerous person that he is.
Selective editing, used as a means of misrepresenting by overstatement, is a tactic that should not be borrowed from the right wing propagandists.
Rather, we should combat them with truth, exposing their bigotry, and their falsehoods.
