City Hall remains a beacon to same-sex couples

As I was walking through San Francisco's City Hall one day this week, I turned a corner and saw two distinguished older gentlemen in dark suits and matching mustaches standing at the top of the stairs. They were getting married.

There has to be a story here, I thought. And there was.

Jack Novotny, 77, and Bill Morgan, 73, have been together 44 years, ever since meeting at a cocktail party in Atlanta on New Year's Eve. They flew in from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., for the ceremony.

"No more living in sin," Novotny said. "We figured, why not? We're getting a little older and maybe more thoughtful."

It was a small but touching ceremony. Novotny puddled up during the vows and apologized as he dabbed at his eyes with a handkerchief.

"That's just me," he said. "I cry at the drop of a hat. Always have."
