(32,886 posts)I guess I looked at that and thought, finally, someone on that side, crazy and screwed up as they are, has spoken out against the bullying.
Is it progress, honestly I am not sure and if you say no, I'm willing to accept that as the answer.

(45,319 posts)What he is saying is just a riff on the constant refrain of the hate preacher-that they are in fact expressing love and that they would not harm anyone...'love the sinner, hate the sin' is the wee saying they worked up as a catch all. These 'ministers' will say 'love' while they also call for war on us, call us pedophiles, murderers, you name it. It's all love. There is nothing new in Pat's rap at all. The same rhetorical tactic is used in secular terms as well. Those out to do great slander do not announce that fact, they come smiling and claiming some form of caring or affinity, from political support to the love of God, it is always 'we mean no harm' and then the hate message.

(32,886 posts)Not sure if you saw the link but this was my kneejerk reaction: http://www.democraticunderground.com/1002606241#post3
I guess I was a little too eager to see some kind of progress coming from that direction.

(45,319 posts)I actually think it good that you would hope for and see the good in what he is saying. Imagine Pat speaking like a human, it's easy if you try....

(1,507 posts)This is just more of their desire to appear "loving" towards us. In the meantime, though, we are still abominations as are our lives. They still want us back in the closet basically. Yep I did catch the hate in there. And Christian Fundies wonder why we call them out as the liars and hypocrites that they are.

Well you can - but that would take a sex club and leather masks.

(32,886 posts)Actually Pat Robertson, bullying is the abomination. Neither of us have any experience with gay sex so I think the only thing to do is to defer to the opinions of my friends in the LGBT community. They seem to like gay sex a lot and they are good people. I think religious people focusing negative attention on gay people is an abomination. How about that?
And I tagged Pat Robertson in the post.

(11,550 posts)It completely escapes me how Robertson, and many like him, are completely unable to see how their words and actions lead to anti-gay bullying. If religious fundamentalist leaders, spokespeople, parents, and teachers consistently tell children that gay people are evil, sinful, disgusting pedophiles, then why are they surprised when those same children act out on that messaging and attack people they perceive as being gay?
So many young people are constantly worried about what others are thinking of them. I think anti-gay bullying, in a way, is a self-protection mechanism that young people can use to keep others from thinking they are gay, and therefore making them the victims of the same bullying. It's all a vicious cycle of fear and control. Can you think of a system of belief that is largely based upon fear and control? I can think of a few.
It's possible that Robertson and his ilk think they are acting from a place of love and helping to bring people closer to God. Personally, I think they can shove their specific brand of Christian love straight up their asses because I have no use for it. (I realize not all Christians believe as Robertson does, but far too many do.)
Yes, Robertson is right in that anti-gay bullying is wrong. But it's not wrong for the reasons he thinks.

(45,319 posts)Other great unsung abominations need some attention. Lending with interest. A proud look. Almost no one preaches against worship of the Idols of Zidon or of Ammon anymore....Eating unclean things, such as shrimp, pork, now there's an area of abomination those well fed crooks forget to mention. Remarriage, there's another one....
