Liberman launched his election campaign under the slogan ‘Ariel to Israel, Umm al-Fahm to Palestine,’ once again signaling his willingness to expel Palestinian citizens from the country. The only difference? This time around he is being flagged as a moderate.

Every time Avigdor Liberman opens his mouth to speak, one can smell hate and fear-mongering. In a speech during his election campaign launch Thursday morning, Liberman went a step further in his racist and inciting speech against Israel’s Arab citizens.

While his Yisrael Beiteinu party is being investigated for a major corruption scandal, Liberman is pulling out his most powerful weapon – one that always works in catching the attention of both the Left and the Right (assuming there is such a thing in Israel): attacking the Arabs, threatening in the most obscene way to harm their lives, security and rights to their land.

Once again he pulls the rabbit out of the hat: “population exchange.” Again? Yes, again and again. And this time, like all the other times, the idea that once seemed so out of touch is beginning to permeate into the political “center.” It goes something like this: Liberman lets fly another crazy idea into the political ether, repeats it at any given opportunity, forcing citizens and the media alike to play around with it. At a certain point they start to discuss it as a serious possibility. “Moving Umm al-Fahm to Palestine.” Slowly but surely the idea sounds like it is becoming more acceptable and possible. It is a classically racist plan whose goal is to erase, demonize and take whatever rights are left to the oppressed minority. Time after time it’s the same message: transfer, population exchange, expelling the local population, loyalty oaths and more.

1. And why this is complete overt racism and bigotry.

Let’s put aside the worrying fact that a party like Yisrael Beiteinu even exists in Israel. Any party in France or Germany, whose main goal was to throw out all the Jews to Israel in a population exchange, or even to segregate all the Jews in one big city (a ghetto, perhaps), would not survive the tidal wave of condemnations from both the Jewish and international community.

So the Bigots sin Israel keep pushing this shit, and their bigot apologists keep on pushing it on the internet.

I'm glad for outlets like 972mag, Middle East Monitor, Mondoweiss and others who will not sit idly by while Israel uses the Palestinians as their private doormat.

But there are plenty of others, My fellow DUers, who would wish to silence dissent by censoring what they don't want you to read.

But it's not true that racist parties would attract overwhelming rejection in Europe. In most countries they'd lose, but would attract a clientele You mention France; LePen's party is worryingly popular there; and are strongly against immigrants of all sorts; they used to be in favour of repatriating all immigrants, though they are a little more ambiguous about it now. Jobbik in Hungary is even more radically against immigrants, and against Jews; one party high-up proposed that the country should 'tally up people of Jewish ancestry who live here, especially in the Hungarian Parliament and the Hungarian government, who, indeed, pose a national security risk to Hungary'. Golden Dawn in Greece have expressed a desire to get rid of Muslims, Jews and minorities in general; and have committed blatant acts of violence and terrorism.

Golden Dawn, the violent blatantly neo-Nazi party, gets about 7% of the vote; Jobbik and the French National Front, close to 20%.

Lieberman gets about 13% of the vote. There are other blatantly racist parties in Israel, and indeed I'd say that Bennett and his 'Jewish Home' are even worse than the Lieberman lot.

So it seems that Israel, like quite a few other countries, has a core vote of about 15 to 20 per cent of voters who are blatantly racist and hard-right. It should be opposed wherever it is found.

Maybe I have just sufficient of the almost-universal Europaean anti-immigrant bigotry myself to feel that it is even worse for an immigrant to attempt to get rid of people indigenous to his country (as is the case with Lieberman) than the other way round. Apart from that, Lieberman is just another LePen or Pat Buchanan or Nigel Farage as far as I'm concerned. And they're all scum!!!
