PA official warns of consequences if US vetoes UN bid

Saeb Erekat says ‘occupied Palestinian state’ will dismantle PA and revert to PLO, join hundreds of international bodies

Top Palestinian Authority official Saeb Erekat has threatened that if the US vetoed the PA’s bid to gain a United Nations-backed timetable for an Israeli withdrawal from the West Bank, they would apply for membership in hundreds of international bodies as citizens of an occupied state in its own right.

Erekat said in a statement Tuesday that the Palestinians would seek to join some 522 organizations, protocols, and treaties, a move aimed at gaining further recognition for a Palestinian state.

US Secretary of State John Kerry said on Wednesday that current relations between Israel and the Palestinians were "unsustainable" and that the United States was conscious of the urgency of the situation.

"The current situation, the status quo, is unsustainable," he said at a joint news conference with German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Berlin.

He added that it was necessary to find a way to negotiate and said the US would continue with these efforts: "Obviously we understand the urgency of it," he said.

The US secretary of state also addressed a major concern of Israel's - nuclear negotiations with Iran.

Some might go so far as to say sixty-six years over-due, but I will not belabor that point.

By now, it is the only thing which can clarify the situation, and put an end to dreams of 'one state between the river and the sea' on both sides of the divide.

The prospect of the annual Gaza War stretching out in perpetuity into the future is enough to make anyone annoyed.

But in this day and age a 'stateless enclave' just cannot be an enduring condition. There has to be some sovereignty and it certainly cannot be an Israeli sovereignty. And no sovereign state could possibly tolerate or be expected to tolerate and acquiesce in, the various impositions and ambitions embodied and reflected in Israeli conditions for Arab Palestinian statehood.

whether it be terror attacks against Israel and inevitable Israeli retaliation or a Palestinian civil war as Fatah and Hamas battle for supremacy.
