BTselem spokesperson and colleague Sarit Michaeli was shot in the leg from close range on Friday by Israeli forces while documenting the weekly protest in Nabi Saleh, as she has been doing for years. She issued a statement Saturday on her understanding of what happened, which I translated below.
Although this is not the first time an Israeli has been wounded by IDF fire at West Bank protests (there are a handful of other cases), it is quite uncommon. It is certainly not the first time a Palestinian or foreigner has been wounded (there are dozens of such cases). It is important to note that Sarit is a professional NGO worker and her presence at the protests in Nabi Saleh is part of the organizations work documenting human rights violations in the occupied West Bank.
As of Saturday evening, no Israeli mainstream media outlet reported on the incident. I contacted the IDF Spokesperson for comment and will update accordingly.

B'Tselem spokeswoman says hurt by rubber bullet during protest
B'Tselem spokeswoman Sarit Michaeli was injured Friday by a rubber bullet fired at her by Border Guard officers during a demonstration in Nabi Salah, according to her.
Michaeli, who had been documenting the protest, sustained light wounds to her thigh and was taken to the Sourasky Medical Center in Tel Aviv. She is due to be discharged on Monday.

(45,850 posts)and Ynet is an english language publication meant primarily for US consumption as opposed to Israeli so if you can find the article in it's Israeli Hebrew language counterpart Yedioth Ahronoth get back to me promise? but please do go on with this, I find the reflexive need to cast doubt on something-anything fascinating if not a bit amusing
oh BTW anything to say about the incident itself?

(58,724 posts)The incident occurred right before Shabbos (Friday late afternoon) and was reported on in the Israeli media right after Shabbos (Saturday night/Sunday morning).
It's rare that Israeli media sources publish anything other than major late-breaking stories during Shabbos since most of the staff is off.

(58,724 posts)I am not fully understanding why you are more concerned with the time that the Israeli media reported on this incident than the details of what actually happened.
Of all the parts to bold in the article, it seems to have been a really strange choice.
In any case, I am glad this woman is OK, and I am distressed by what appears to be a deliberate and unnecessary targeting of her by the border police.
Unless there is more video to be released, there appears to be no justification whatsoever for the action.
Hopefully there will be further investigation and appropriate consequences.

i just watched the video..
1) ....the soldiers are more than 50m away
2) rubber bullets are incredibly inaccurate... especially when one is running
conclusion:
who knows where the soldier was actually aiming, and where ever he was aiming the rubber bullets didnt go there, hence she was not targeted
________
just to add a bit of fun information: you'll notice the tire burning, many times thats lit when the newspaper people arrive or are passing by or the video cameras people show up to get some attention. The soldiers then arrive and the fun begins.
or its lit when the soldiers who are patrolling get close enough to see it....
If by chance the video people dont show up or don't stay..then the tire gets doused and everyone goes home..as there is no reason to protest without some PR

(45,850 posts)hey did you know this post made the front page @ around 4:25 am cdt?
I can't figure stuff like that out, how stuff goes up and down here. Someone once told me that one of my posts got "memory holed" and that this was a rare distinction. Apparently.

Richard Engel is excellent at delivering a very spongy "reality TV" version of embedded reporting. The phoniness of it is plain outrageous.
Both of the vids are riveting - because they so clearly show a detail about a reality that's insane.

(9,688 posts)I suspect she endured considerable pain once the shock abated.
I can't figure out wtf the IDF thinks it's doing in the West Bank.
Aside from the obvious: they are at war with Palestine so, by necessity, can't admit that the Palestinian population is human, equal in every way with respect right to the land.
That pervasive way of thinking infects the whole I/P debate.

(5,397 posts)That they're at war with Palestine, (they aren't, actually), therefore by "necessity" are unable to consider Palestinians human?
You're really great at pointing out how millions of people hold a really specific, incredibly racist viewpoint regardless of whether or not anyone actually voices it. It's obvious to you that they think this way by necessity even!
The irony of making accusations like these is actually pretty funny.
