How concerned should we be about the Chinese ?

I'm referring to their Air Defense Identification Zone.

I don't know precisely how I feel about all this. Seeking input.

1. I look forward to the day China starts running their part of the world

They can start with N. Korea. I do not think that China wants to conquer the world militarily. Why bother. They already own a good chunk of it and why would they want a dump like the US? The place is falling apart.

China has always considered themselves to live in the best place in the world. That is why China has never tried to conquer the world. They don't want it.

2. Very concerned, because they're starting to bully their neighbors

and are trying to muscle everyone out of international waters and airspace. The Pacific is where so much of our economy is tied up, and we have defense treaties there if trouble starts between China and some neighbors. Very concerned.

I've read your exact position in the media, so, I posted this poll. I think one can be progressive and still evaluate China in terms of its impact on its neighbors.

Sorry, disagree about push poll. As you notice, I voted for a nuanced position. How concerned = ranges from ZERO concern to OMFG Commies !? (stupid rw framing).

5. What exactly is our interest in a territorial dispute over some uninhabited islands

IIRC, there was some uproar when they extended their defense perimeter. Not only by the US, but by Japan and VN. I couldn't care less if they take over those islands, but I know other countries do care.

As long as China plays nice with its neighbors, I don't care. That's my ONLY concern. Unfortunately, if they do not play nice with their neighbors, we will tend to get dragged in. We are an ally of Japan, so, if they get upset, they want us to support them.

I hope that explains my concern. We may have to agree to disagree.

8. So you do think we should get involved in a conflict between Japan and China.

9. No, I don't think that at all

However, I'd want there to be no severe conflicts between the two. Makes life much easier for the US. As long as those two countries can growl at each other without weapons, I couldn't care less. They have very bad blood, i.e. rape of Nanking. Should there be NO bad blood ? Of course, WW2 was a long time ago, but there it is. *Some* people in China still hate Japan, and *some* people in Japan hate China. Will they ever engage in another conflict ? I don't know, but I don't want to find out either.

Again, I'm sensing we need to agree to disagree.

14. Well actually Japan stole them from China in the 1890's.

By force, as part of their imperial ambitions that culminated in WWII. Both China proper and Taiwan objected to the transfer back to Japan in 1972 by the US (which had seized control during the war) and re-asserted sovereignty over the islands. This is a legitimate issue, not just some odd reckless blustering by China.

16. Yes they did. Did you have a point?

Ownership of these islands is in dispute. Vietnam, Malaysia, China, Japan, Taiwan and the Philippines all dispute who owns what. Certainly Japan's ownership by conquest is not the best argument. China can document sovereignty in many cases going back several hundred years.

17. BS; again - Nice China apology
Sun Aug 3, 2014, 03:26 PM

They are no 'Friend' of the US or any other country in the region.

China NEVER had a claim or any reason to even think they had a claim to the islands off the Philippines other then the oil exploration reports

Where do you think all those AK rifles in use destabilizing governments all across Africa come from ????????? People have got quit drinking the Corporate Free Trade Kool Aid of "China is our Friend" BS

18. Chinese texts of the 12th century record these islands being a part of Chinese territory.

Other than that you make a solid case that noting that five different nations have territorial claims on the Spratly Islands is a "China apology". Or not. But more to the point, this is not a concern of the US at all, it is a matter between Vietnam, Malaysia, Philippines, China, Taiwan, and not really Japan who only has any claim at all based on their era of imperial aggression from the late 19th through the mid 20th centuries.
