Date 22.03.2019
New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters landed in Istanbul on Friday to challenge Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan about why he has repeatedly shown footage of a shooting at a mosque in Christchurch that left 50 people dead.
New Zealand, which has tried to stop the footage from spreading, denounced Erdogan earlier this week for showing it at political rallies throughout Turkey, sparking a diplomatic spat between the countries.
What you need to know:
Peters and Erdogan are attending an emergency executive meeting of the 57-member Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Istanbul.
Peters said his country would ensure "Muslim communities in New Zealand feel safe and secure."
He added that the suspected shooter would "spend the rest of his life" in prison.
Erdogan praised New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern for her reaction to the attacks.
The Turkish president also called on New Zealand to reveal the suspect's connections.

Why has Erdogan showed the footage? The Turkish president screened excerpts of the shooting at rallies for upcoming local elections to denounce Islamophobia. Despite New Zealand's protests, Erdogan again showed footage on Thursday.

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan replayed graphic footage of New Zealands worst mass shooting at an election rally on Friday - just hours after that countrys foreign minister met him and said he believed the controversial showings had stopped.
New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters arrived in Istanbul on Friday to talk to Erdogan about the footage and comments he has made on the shooting of 50 people at mosques in Christchurch a week ago, which have drawn condemnation from New Zealand and Australia.
But Peters emerged from a brief meeting with Erdogan and struck a conciliatory tone, saying that he had not raised at the meeting some of the most controversial comments the Turkish leader has made at rallies.
He also said that he had not asked Erdogan to stop showing the videos.
I did not ask that question because I felt that I did not have to ask it, because they are not doing that anymore, Peters told reporters after attending a meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
