More top Fifa officials arrested in corruption investigation

More high-ranking Fifa officials have been arrested as part of a long-running corruption investigation led by the United States, according to Swiss authorities and reports in the New York Times.

Swiss authorities confirmed two arrests, but the New York Times quoted law enforcement officials as saying more than 12 people were expected to be charged. At least one of the arrests was made at the Baur au Lac hotel in Zurich, the same location at which a group of representatives of football’s governing body were arrested in May on corruption charges.

Switzerland’s federal office of justice has said that the officials are being held in custody pending extradition. They are suspected of accepting bribes of millions of dollars “in return for selling marketing rights in connection with football tournaments in Latin America, as well as World Cup qualifying matches”.

Swiss officials said that according to the arrest requests, some of the offences were agreed and prepared in the US, with payments also processed via US banks. Police in the Zurich canton were expected to hold hearings on the arrest requests on Thursday. The Swiss officials said they would release the names of those arrested and the outcomes of the hearings later in the day.

According to the New York Times’s European sports correspondent, Sam Borden, Concacaf president Alfredo Hawit of Honduras is among those held. Hawit was appointed interim head of Concacaf after Jeffrey Webb was arrested in May. Juan Ángel Napout, president of Conmebol, was also reportedly arrested at the Baur au Lac.
