Major oil sands spill in Alberta

This happened a couple of days ago and I haven't seen anything on it here. 5 million litres is about 1.25 million U.S. gallons.

--------

One of the largest leaks in Alberta history has spilled about five million litres of emulsion from a Nexen Energy pipeline at the company's Long Lake oilsands facility south of Fort McMurray.

The leak was discovered Wednesday afternoon.

Nexen said in a statement its emergency response plan has been activated and personnel were onsite. The leak has been stabilized, the company said.

----------

Yesterday CBC radio was saying the pipeline that ruptured was only completed in 2014, the leak monitoring system didn't function, and that it was someone not affiliated with the company who was just in the area who came across the spill. Had this person not come along, it would have been a lot worse.
