Georgia Power releases solar RFP (495 MW by 2016)

http://www.bizjournals.com/atlanta/blog/capitol_vision/2014/04/georgia-power-releases-solar.html

Georgia Power Co. issued a request for proposals Wednesday for the most ambitious solar energy initiative in the Atlanta-based utility’s history.

The state Public Service Commission unanimously approved the RFP, which seeks bids for the development of 495 megawatts of solar power generation to go on line next year and in 2016.

The commission gave the go-ahead to 425 megawatts of solar energy from Georgia Power last summer and authorized the initial 70-megawatt commitment in late 2012.

“Solar power continues to make enormous strides in Georgia,” said Commissioner Lauren “Bubba” McDonald, who has been a leader on the PSC in pursuing development of solar energy. “Since the project must be located in Georgia, this solar initiative will have a positive economic impact on Georgia.”

...that the people who soaked the planet - a planet on which 3 billion people lack basic sanitation - for a trillion dollars to produce less than one exajoule of energy per year, still haven't managed to understand the basic physics concept of the difference between (peak) power and energy.

A SOLAR RECORD!!! RECORD!!!

Has the solar industry ever, once, after blowing a trillion bucks and spreading cadmium all over the place, ever managed to produce a single exajoule in a year, or is it still asking people to bleed money to announce (electronically ironically) a power output for 20 seconds on a cloudless day on the summer solstice?

The $700,000 Mass MOCA system - the money for this baby came out of the pockets of artists, the community that Art Museums are supposed to serve - hasn't produced a single watt since October of 2013. It failed. It's now a big pile of electronic junk on the roof of an art museum. It didn't last five fucking years before it got ready for a landfill.

Even when it was working, it could barely manage 10% capacity utilization but IT"S 52 KILOWATTS!!!!!!! (Actually it never, not once, produced that much instantaneous power. This history of its performance is on line.

It was asinine to have thrown all this money at such a poor excuse for an energy program, but unfortunately in pop circles, where respect for engineering and science is zilch, these people have the gall to ask for more money to produce more of nothing.

It will fall to future generations to clean up this awful toxic mess. I wonder if they'll be hauling the MASS MOCA electronic waste to Maine. Nah, some poor unfortunates in some place like Nigeria will need to pull this toxic crap to pieces for a dollar a day.
