Repeal of hated hybrid tax on a fast track in Assembly

RICHMOND

The landmark transportation funding package passed by the Virginia General Assembly last year appears to be easily withstanding legislative attempts to pick it apart this year - with one notable exception.

A $64 annual tax on hybrid vehicles, while accounting for a minuscule portion of the gigantic roads package, generated howls of outrage from hybrid owners. And lawmakers are listening.

Legislation (HB975) to repeal the hybrid tax sailed through a House subcommittee Friday with barely a murmur. The bipartisan 5-0 vote signaled that the measure is on a fast track to passage.

A companion bill has already cleared a Senate committee and is up for a floor vote next week.
