CIA Shuts Down Center On Climate Change & National Security - "Little Internal Support"
The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has shuttered its Center on Climate Change and National Security, an office created in 2009 to serve as the “focal point” of the agency’s work on the topic.
Greenwire broke the story earlier Monday, reporting that the office closed earlier this year, and that the work is continuing under other auspices. An agency spokesman confirmed the closure to the publication.
“The CIA for several years has studied the national security implications of climate change,” CIA spokesman Todd Ebitz said. “This work is now performed by a dedicated team in an office that looks at a variety of economic and energy security issues affecting the United States.”
The CIA is one of multiple federal agencies to explore the nexus between climate change and security — sometimes drawing GOP criticism in the process.
