Singapore's Hydrogen Turbine Powers 860,000 Homes with Clean Energy

Singapore’s Hydrogen Turbine Powers 860,000 Homes with Clean Energy

Singapore’s New Hydrogen Turbine Project

Singapore is taking a significant step towards a cleaner energy future with the development of a new hydrogen turbine on Jurong Island. This cutting-edge facility promises to power over 860,000 four-room public housing flats and substantially reduce carbon emissions, marking an important milestone in the city-state’s sustainable energy journey.

Harnessing Hydrogen for Cleaner Power

The hydrogen-ready combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) will partially burn hydrogen to generate 600 megawatts of cleaner energy. This innovative approach is expected to produce significantly fewer carbon emissions compared to traditional fossil fuels. The emission reduction is roughly equivalent to the monthly carbon absorption capacity of 1.6 million green trees, highlighting the project’s potential to contribute positively to the environment.

YTL PowerSeraya’s Strategic Investment

The project, spearheaded by YTL PowerSeraya, involves an investment of 800 million Singapore dollars. This substantial financial commitment reflects the company’s dedication to advancing Singapore’s clean energy capabilities. With an expected completion date by the end of 2027, the hydrogen-ready turbine is set to operate using a blend of 50% hydrogen and 50% fossil fuels initially. However, with future modifications, the turbine could run entirely on hydrogen, further enhancing its environmental benefits.

Enhancing Energy Security and Meeting Growing Demand

Singapore’s electricity demand is projected to grow at an annual rate of up to 5% over the next decade. The new hydrogen system will play a crucial role in meeting this rising demand while supporting the country’s energy security. Second Minister for Trade and Industry Tan See Leng emphasized the continuing importance of natural gas as part of Singapore’s energy mix. As a nation with limited renewable energy resources, natural gas will remain vital for ensuring stable base-load electricity supply during the transition to low-carbon energy sources...more

...fuel made by exergy destruction of dangerous fossil fuels, thus wasting energy and driving the climate collapse that 50 years of hydrogen bullshit has done nothing but to accelerate.

A Giant Climate Lie: When they're selling hydrogen, what they're really selling is fossil fuels.

The carbon intensity of this dirty fuel was reported in the scientific paper I linked today, which demonstrated that if hydrogen were made using the useless solar industry - it isn't, because the solar industry is useless and trivial but is advertised as such by the fossil fuel industry in a "bait and switch" - the carbon intensity would be roughly 2 kg CO2 per kg H2, which is anything but clean. The way that hydrogen is actually made, by steam reforming of dangerous fossil fuels has an even higher carbon intensity.

Nuclear vs Solar Comparison of the Greenhouse Gas Emissions to Produce Electrolytic Hydrogen.

(I note that as the point of advertising hydrogen to greenwash fossil fuels, the salespeople who push it here oppose nuclear energy, which in theory, if we chose to waste clean energy (nuclear) to make a greenwash the realities of hydrogen, solar would be even more wasteful than wasting clean nuclear energy for this fossil fuel marketing plan.)

This is announcement that Singapore is planning on powering itself even more wastefully than just directly burning the coal or gas from which hydrogen is made. It's a dishonest scam.

The IEA has begun including soothsaying about hydrogen in the World Energy Outlook as of 2024, noting that hydrogen is trivial and useless now, and predicts will be still be so "by 2050," but details that to make 5 EJ hydrogen, 7 EJ of primary energy will need to be consumed.

IEA World Energy Outlook 2024
Table A.1a: World energy supply Page 296.

In 2050, the IEA predicts that world energy demand will be over 700 EJ, with 7 EJ being used to produce 5 EJ of hydrogen energy.

Whenever I put up a post here pointing to the scientific literature involving how wasteful the hydrogen scam is, I'm sure to see a dishonest fossil fuel ad pretending that hydrogen is clean.

It isn't. It's a filthy fuel.

6. So where does the hydrogen come from?

You can't just suck it out of nowhere.
Nuclear?
Solar?
Tidal?
Wind?

I know, some process that involves burning fossil fuels!

So the hydrogen step will just be one more step in energy transformation getting electricity into the grid, with its own associated efficiency losses.

Scam article!

Think. Again.

8. None of the processes you listed involve burning fossil fuels when producing Green Hydrogen....

....the processes involved in producing and using Green Hydrogen are fossil-free and it does not emit any CO2 when Green Hydrogen is used for any kind of power generation.

So yes, it IS a scam when an article claims Green Hydrogen is a "dirty fuel", it is not a dirty fuel.

And yes, every form of energy transformation (including fossil fuels to electricity) incurs efficiency losses.

Think. Again.

2. More great clean energy news!

The sooner they can build out a "Green Hydrogen" industry to feed those turbines with non-CO2 emitting H2, the sooner those 860,000 homes will be running fossil fuel free!

Nothing mentioned about how the hydrogen is produced.

So - a pipe dream, or a scam?

Why not feed the natural gas into the generator, and skip the hydrogen step?
Going to be more efficient, lesser energy transfer losses.

Think. Again.

...whereas feeding Green H2 into the generators would not use any fossil fuels or emit any CO2 into the atmosphere.
