40 years ago, scientists predicted climate change. And hey, they were right

This month the world has been celebrating the 50th anniversary of Neil Armstrong setting foot on the Moon. But this week sees another scientific anniversary, perhaps just as important for the future of civilisation.

Forty years ago, a group of climate scientists sat down at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts for the first meeting of the “Ad Hoc Group on Carbon Dioxide and Climate”. It led to the preparation of what became known as the Charney Report – the first comprehensive assessment of global climate change due to carbon dioxide. It doesn’t sound as impressive as landing on the Moon, and there certainly weren’t millions waiting with bated breath for the deliberations of the meeting.

The meeting at Woods Hole gathered together about 10 distinguished climate scientists, who also sought advice from other scientists from across the world. The group was led by Jule Charney from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, one of the most respected atmospheric scientists of the 20th century.

... the Charney Report is an exemplar of good science, and the success of its predictions over the past 40 years has firmly established the science of global warming....subsequent science has, however, only confirmed the conclusions of the Charney Report, although much more detailed predictions of climate change are now possible.

1. I want climate change reparations

Every oil and gas CEO who funded climate change denial should pay their entire wealth to the poor people affected.
The Koches and the Wilkses should lead the way. Get their net worth down to zero and give it to poor people in low lying areas.

Climate change reparations: make the Koches pay. They stole their money via lies.

3. We had the information.

On June 20, 1979, Jimmy Carter had 32 solar panels installed at the White House. Ronald Reagan had them removed.

We knew what needed to be done. We could have done it! But the Republicans squandered a half contury of irreplaceable time for a pocket full of cash.

14. Ronald Reagan was really a true turning point for the worst

We went from an intelligent president who believed in stuff like saving our environment and helping the lower class, to 'trickle down economics' and seeing the environment as something to be pillaged as much as possible.

4. I can't say I believed in man caused climate change 40 years ago

But by 30 years ago I was convinced. I guess that the difference with science deniers, no amount of fact will sway them to change their beliefs

6. "No amount of facts" 👍

That's why we've been doomed.

5. The oil companies have known too.

We've had generations who have hidden or denied this.

9. Don't forget the doctors, pharmacies, Walmart, etc

who knew about the additive problems with opioids. Throughout world history anyone with money and power usually abuses it for their own benefit despite harm to others. Unfortunately they usually get away with it. This will never change since humans are selfish and greedy and hateful. Humans kill there own for $$$$$$$.

11. 40 years ago I read the articles, believed them, and moved my family to higher ground

Further north and inland than the coastal prairies of Galveston county.

I think I made the right call, though my family hated me for it at the time.
