Caribbean island of Dominica bans plastic and Styrofoam

(CNN) — The fight against single-use plastic has been gathering steam over the past months, but the Caribbean nation of Dominica has taken the crusade to another level.

http://www.cnn.com/travel/article/dominica-plastic-ban/

The island nation has announced its aim to completely ban common plastics and single-use Styrofoam cups and food containers -- effective January 2019.

Announcing this intention in June's budget address, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit said his government wanted to help preserve Dominica's famously beautiful natural landscape.
But Dominica's aim is much greater. The country has made it clear it wants to be the world's first climate-resilient nation.

The full list of items that will be banned in Dominica has yet to be finalized, but the government says it will include plastic straws, plastic plates, plastic forks, plastic knives, Styrofoam cups and Styrofoam containers.

You wouldn't be able to tell the difference either. I bought miso soup bowl at the supermarket and read that it was not recycled but could biodegrade which is better. I then read the fine print and discovered it was produced from cornstarch somehow. It looks acts just like plastic, you can put it in the dishwasher even.

I bought a needle threader, a gadget that helps people with poor eyesight like me thread a needle. (I am a sewing addict. I love to make things, so I need to thread needles.) The needle threader was very small and sold in a big plastic and paper wrapper. I'm really sick of all the plastic that is used to wrap things. It is harming our planet.

Plastic from cornstarch sounds like a good idea.

and all of those water bottles instead of metal, wood and glass as well as all those plastic water bottles! Corn starch wouldn't add to deforestation but I am sure there are a few drawbacks with production, economics, natural resources, etc that I am not familiar with since it is not my area of expertise. Every little bit would help the planet though...even if it's only 10% of all plastics used.

No styrofoam For decades I think they were gonna ban it here and never did but plenty places have already . I don't see it as much as all the plastic in stores

The quality of the cornstarch is higher too imo
