Inuit are calling on the Canadian and Danish governments to step in and halt an international satellite launch next week, over fears the rocket's debris risks contaminating an ecological haven in the High Arctic.
On Friday, the European Space Agency and the Netherlands Space Office are launching the Sentinel-5P satellite from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in northern Russia. Its mission is to monitor air pollution and climate change.
The rocket used to blast it into space is a converted SS-19 Cold War-era intercontinental ballistic missile the Rokot by German-based launch company Eurockot.

Kind of ironic that a satellite being launched to study the environment is having its potential environmental damage to a subsistence food source downplayed by the ESA and Canadian and Russian governments. Without having someone there to monitor the effects before and after the time of the launch and splash down, how would they know?

(5,719 posts)I believe this satellite will orbit north to south so there would be no launch assist at the equator.
By the way, my 3000th post - it only took me 8 years .
