Supreme Court Justice Rosa Weber suspended on Monday (12) excerpts from four decrees of President Jair Bolsonaro, published on the eve of the Carnival holiday, which eased carrying and possession of weapons in Brazil. The rules would have come into force on Tuesday (13).

The magistrate invalidated the rule that increased the limit of firearms that an ordinary citizen can acquire from four to six, as long as he or she fulfilled the necessary requirements to obtain the Certificate of Registration of Firearms.

Rosa also suspended permission for police, magistrates, prison officials and prosecutors to purchase two weapons for restricted use.

The magistrate further revoked the provision that waived prior authorization from the Army Command for collectors and snipers to acquire weapons.

The decrees also lessened the Army's oversight of arms circulation.

The decision will be analyzed at the court's virtual plenary session, which runs from April 16 to 24. During this period, the other ministers must enter their votes in the system and announce whether to endorse or revoke the minister's decision.
