Giant cat drawing discovered on a hillside in Peru

By Mark Armstrong with AP last updated: 17/10/2020 - 16:28

Archaeologists in Peru have discovered a new outline of a feline on a hillside in Nazca.

They were carrying out maintenance in the area during the coronavirus pandemic.

Such giant outlines are normally made of stones and are known as geoglyphs.

The cat-shaped figure had been almost completely erased before it was uncovered.

"Well, one of the things that continues to surprise, and that many ask, is how we still find new geoglyphs," explained Johny Isla, the Director of the Nazca-Palpa Management Plan at the Ministry of Culture.

"And in fact, there are new ones and we will continue to find more. This has improved a lot in recent years with the use of modern technology. Before we had aerial photographs or photographs from planes, but now we have photos that can be taken with drones at very low altitudes and that helps us a lot."

6. No doubt the cat image conceals an underground trove

of alien cat videos. The aliens hoped a future intelligent civilization would discover and enjoy them.

An ancient etching of a giant cat has been discovered in the Peruvian desert.

The 2,000-year-old discovery was made among the Nazca Lines a Unesco World Heritage site which are made up of hundreds of geometric images.

The images, known as geoglyphs consist of around 300 figures, including creatures and plants, that were scratched into the desert sands.

The 120ft-long feline had remained untouched for two millennia on a hill beside the Pan-American Highway stretching from Alaska to Argentina, the i reported.

The cat was uncovered during construction work to improve access to a viewing platform, archeologist Jhonny Isla told reporters.

8. Giant 2,000-year-old cat found etched into desert hillside in Peru

About 37-meter-long, the figure is estimated to be around 2,000 years old and made up of groves carved into the mountain coupled with groupings of stones

Peruvian archaeologists have uncovered an enormous cat etched into a hillside in the desert of the famed Nazca Lines. Home to the geoglyphs of a hummingbird, a monkey, a spider and a human, the newly revealed form of the feline is about 37-meter-long, and expected to be dating back more than 2,000 years.

The figure is made up of a long body, striped tail and head with distinctive pointed ears. It emerged during work to improve access to one of the hills that provides a natural vantage point.

Johny Isla, the Peruvian culture ministry's specialist for the Nazca-Pampa region, said it was estimated to be around 2,000 years old and made up of groves carved into the mountain coupled with groupings of stones.

"The figure was in the process of disappearing because it was on a slope that was subject to quite extensive erosion which resulted in it being hidden for many years," he said.
