President Barack Obama on Thursday extended for one year an executive order declaring the situation in Venezuela a threat to US national security, saying the local government continues to erode human rights guarantees and persecute opposition leaders.
In a letter addressed to leaders of the House of Representatives and the Senate, Obama deemed it "necessary to continue the national emergency declared in the executive order 13692 as of March 8, 2015, regarding the situation in Venezuela."
The situation in the country "has not improved," the document reads.
According to Obama's Administration, the Venezuelan government continues "to erode human rights, persecute political opponents, curtails freedom of speech, use violence, violate human rights in response to anti-government demonstrations," AFP reported.
