Another clandestine wiretapping operation discovered in Bogota

Another clandestine wiretapping operation discovered in Bogota
May 6, 2014 posted by Philip Acuña

A new illegal wiretapping operation, the second in a year, has been discovered in Colombia’s capital Bogota, local media reported Tuesday.

One man has been arrested after the Prosecutor General’s technical investigation team (CTI) raided an apartment in northern Bogota where surveillance equipment used to intercept electronic communications was discovered, Radio Caracol reported.

Peace talks again target of wiretapping operation

Eduardo Montealegre, Colombia’s prosecutor general, has claimed that the room — like one that was dismantled months ago — was used to surveil officials involved in the ongoing peace negotiations between the Colombian government and the rebel group, FARC.

Not the first wiretapping scandal

Tuesday’s discovery is concerning, given Colombia’s troubled history with government surveillance operations.

In February, based on 15-months of reporting and testimony from an unnamed inside source, Semana Magazine concluded that a Colombian military intelligence unit funded and coordinated by the United States’ Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) used advanced online technology and hacking techniques to monitor the text messages and emails of opposition politicians and representatives of both the government and the FARC involved in the Havana peace negotiations.

In the US there is legal wiretapping.

4. I think they need to follow procedures for a legal wiretap, in other circumstances no

for example, it wouldn't be illegal to surveil on the FARC members in Colombia. Colombia has a REAL active insurgency in the country whose stated goal is to overthrow the government (it doesn't matter who is president) and institute a marxist system.

This is very unlike the situation in Venezuela for example where there are only imaginary forces at work to overthrow the violent, brutal, corrupt, and inept government.

5. Why on earth have they consistantly referred to these cases as scandals?

Do you even dream they would consider this one of the biggest outrages in recent history if everything was acceptable about it?

Give them credit for even the slightest intelligence. OF COURSE the wiretapping is illegal. That's exactly WHY they've been putting people on trial for this since the first breaking news of Uribe's D.A.S.'s spying on his political enemies scandal was made public several years ago.

Please involve yourself in doing your homework on this subject, like D.U. Democrats do if they hope to know anything.

9. Report: Venezuela is spying on its Jews

Caracas - Venezuela's secret service, SEBIN, is spying on the country's Jewish community, according to leaked documents said to be from the spy agency.

Last week, Analisis24, a right-leaning Argentinean news website, released 50 documents attributed to the Venezuelan intelligence agency containing private information on prominent Venezuelan Jews, local Jewish organizations and Israeli diplomats in Latin America. The Anti-Defamation League, among others, believes the documents are authentic based on the wealth of detailed and private information included.

The papers include a dossier on Espacio Anna Frank, a coexistence group in Caracas, with clandestinely taken photos of its offices and private information on its personnel, including their home addresses, passport numbers and recent travel itineraries. It identifies the organization as a "strategic arm of the Israeli intelligence agency in the country," the Mossad, and as a front for "far right-wing Zionists" to recruit agents using "subversive socio-political influence."

Other documents say the local Jewish community has benefited from the "political and military interference" of the United States in the South American country's affairs and accuses certain Venezuelan Jews, like journalist Abraham Belilty Bittan and former parliamentarian Paulina Gamus, of being foreign agents.

The ADL says the report is deeply troubling and is a further sign of the government of Hugo Chavez's inveterate bias against Jews.

Very interesting learning there is an Analisis24 "news" group in Argentina, representing the very same people who tortured, murdered, "disappeared" and threw suspected leftists out of airplanes into rivers and the ocean for their political beliefs. I'm sure they would be a superior source of information.

Looking forward to learning anything I can about them.

And it's not the first bullshit they've pulled.

Their goal is to fight "sobre la penetracion y actuacion del comunismo en America Latina". Their new twitter is set up for a Hitleresque sounding "Periodismo de Emergencia" calling all neocons to the battlestation.

Even moderate Left Christina Kirchner has to go according to these neocons.

25. Wow, thank you for this. Not that I am surprised. The rush to publish what imho, is nothing but right wing propaganda, is disturbing at best. One doesn't always need to see the proof, right wing propaganda is not hard to recognize.
