Colombian Paramilitary Men Were Contacted to Overthrow Chavez

Bogota, May 11 (Prensa Latina) Former leader of the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia (AUC) Salvatore Mancuso revealed today that Venezuelan generals and politicians contacted them to create a similar structure in this country and overthrow Chavez.

According to Mancuso, "at some point" such group of Venezuelans, without specifying names, contacted the then paramilitary leader Carlos Castaño, assassinated in 2004, aiming at creating a paramilitary bloc in the neighboring country.

"A few people arrived interested in forming Self-Defense Forces in Venezuela to overthrow President Chavez, but not attempting to assassinate him," Mancuso affirmed from the United States in an interview with Caracol Radio.

Mancuso announced that the government of Former President Alvaro Uribe attempted to silence him by sending him to the United States.

Given the ubiquitous popularity of the tactic ("death squads" AKA "freedom fighters&quot , I have no doubt it was considered. But it's interesting that in this case nothing much has come of it, which suggests a lack of willing recruits, or some similar pragmatic difficulty.
