In Central America, women killed ‘with impunity’ just because they’re women

'Femicide,' the crime of murdering females because of their gender, is a leading cause of death among young women in countries including El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala. Machismo and impunity from prosecution are to blame.

By Deborah Hastings / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

They are dumped in alleys, on road sides or abandoned in the middle of public parks.

Trash bags are a favored covering, flimsy plastic blankets topping the corpses of women whose fatal mistake was being female. Sometimes their murderers make no attempt at all to disguise what they've done — as if the women mattered so little, and their deaths deemed so trivial, the remains are dumped on sidewalks like so much litter.

The most dangerous countries for women are in Latin America, where machismo and virtual impunity from punishment contribute to "femicide," the killing of women because they are women, according to experts.

Half of the countries with very high femicide rates are in Latin America, according to a 2012 report by the Small Arms Survey often cited by United Nations officials and women's rights advocates.

in places that had ultraviolent civil wars. The extreme disregard for humanity witnessed by citizens for decades had to damage the psyche in some way. These countries were never rebuilt after their civil wars, and there is raging unemployment, extreme poverty, and horrendous levels of violence.

Tragic.
