Salvadoran president: predecessor mismanaged Taiwan funds

Salvadoran president: predecessor mismanaged Taiwan funds
By The Associated Press January 9, 2014

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador - El Salvadoran President Mauricio Funes says one of the country's ex-leaders has essentially admitted to criminal mismanagement of $10 million that Taiwan donated to the Central American government in 2003 and 2004.

Funes says former President Francisco Flores made what amounts to an "extra-judicial confession" in a statement this week before the country's congress.

Flores said he had received the money personally from Taiwain and had handed it over to the intended state projects, but offered no proof of the handover. Flores governed from 1999 to 2004.

Funes said the money should have been handled through official channels.

Taiwan's Embassy in San Salvador said it had no immediate comment on the dispute.
