Ex-ruling party official moves to Mexico's left

Ex-ruling party official moves to Mexico's left
Associated Press – 10 hrs ago

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico's leftist Democratic Revolution Party says one of its candidates for Senate is Manuel Bartlett, the very man that party activists have long accused of cheating their founder out of the presidency.

The saying "politics makes strange bedfellows" has seldom been so true.

As interior secretary in 1988, Bartlett oversaw the 1988 presidential vote count, and was widely accused of rigging it to keep Democratic Revolution's founder Cuauhtemoc Cardenas out of the presidency. He has denied that.

Bartlett has since broken with leaders of the long-ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party and has had a rapprochement with the Democratic Revolution in recent years.
