Kibbutz kibbutz kibbutz (CNN)

How did a socialist kibbutz influence Bernie Sanders?

http://www.cnn.com/2016/02/09/politics/bernie-sanders-kibbutz-volunteer-israel/

"Israel (CNN)A small collective community in northern Israel, modeled after the communist ideals of the Soviet Union, may hold clues to the development of U.S. presidential candidate Bernie Sanders' political beliefs.

Sanders is Jewish and a self-described "democratic socialist." In the 1960s, he spent several months volunteering on an Israeli collective farm, or kibbutz, that functioned according to communist principles."

More there...

"For years, Sanders has said he had been on a kibbutz but has been vague about exactly where he stayed. The mystery was apparently solved last week when Israeli newspaper Haaretz dug up a 1990 interview with Sanders. In the article, Sanders claimed he spent several months in 1963 volunteering at Shaar Ha'amakim."

if he gets the nomination. 'Sanders spent months in a Communist commune during his formative years...' and so on.

There is so much in his biography for them to use that it's no surprise that while they fund millions in anti-Hillary ads in the primary states, there's not a peep about Bernie. They're holding their powder.

If it was brag worthy we'd have all heard about it.
Trump has already hinted at this subject.
You know he's already gathered the info on the kibbitz visit & its not going to matter what is tru, false or somewhere on the edge of either.
To Trump & the RW, this item is just a hammer.
They are opportunists. Sanders needs to get this out to the public now & do some pre-emptive damage control, to mute the eventual blow Trump's waiting in the wings with.
Yikes!!

admire Bernie for doing this.

That said, I am likely far from the US mainstream in this and there are some for whom the word "communist" raises red flags that can never be lowered. You can bet your bottom dollar that the GOPers will use this, and other episodes in his life, to paint him in the worst possible way.

And yes, the Hillary Clinton Group is awesome!

"...Code-word: Billionaire. Proceed agent..."

Bernie's subconscious training kicked in (including his
secret agent, kung-fu death finger). Trained in a
secret KGB program to drone the American public
to death with repetitive monologue, the plan has
encountered a fatal flaw. When confronted with
material and questions outside the realm of his
training, he reverts to regular Bernie, befuddled
and stripped of his training. Only by getting back
on the rails of his stump speech, can he regain
his covert purposes.

that is hilarious!

That said, I also admire Bernie for doing this. Many coming of age Jewish teens travel to Israel to work on a Kibbutz and often say it is a transformative experience. Unfortunately, the Republicans will have an absolute field day with this. One of the reasons they have not gone after Bernie is because they are saving it in the event he does get the nomination. They will unleash such a torrent on him that Kerry's "swiftboating" will seem like a ride in an inflatable pool toy in comparison.

2) Bernie's worldview was already formed before he went there. In the 1960s he was already a grown man, being years older than Hillary, who was just a schoolgirl in 1964.

There is NO mystery to this.

If you want to read a sympathetic rendering of the founding of the kibbutzim and the kibbutzniks who pioneered them, I suggest Leon Uris' book Exodus, which was published in 1958 and remained an influential bestseller for years.
