In the Town Hall Hillary Clinton cited Henry Nouwen, the Dutch Jesuit who said,

"Practice the Discipline of Gratitude."

Her thoughtful response to the Rabbi's question will touch so many Americans, I think.

ON EDIT: A CNN commentator said that her response to this question "lifted the veil on Hillary Clinton."

....the question, but she went one step further than the question.

The highlight of the event to me.

THEY WOULD NEVER ASK A MALE ABOUT THE MONEY HE RAISED FROM SPEAKING TO GOLDMAN SACHS OR ANYONE ELSE. THEY WOULD BE HIGH-FIVING ANYONE WHO MADE THIS KIND OF MONEY, INCLUDING BS.

THEY SHOULD JUST SAY WHAT THEY ARE REALLY THINKING- YOU ARE A WOMAN AND SHOULD NOT BE PAID THIS MUCH.

THIS IS A TOTALLY SEXIST QUESTION.

I WISH SHE WOULD CALL ANDERSON AND EVERYONE ELSE ON THIS.

I don't have a television. Mostly I try to guage by people's reactions. But now I just shake my head at the constant anti-Hillary shit that tries to pass as righteous morality based on principle.

I know who I am going to vote for. This Crap On Hillary Underground is like being really fucked up at a really fucked up party.

I am not trying to bring your thread down. I am just saying that it is nice to hear about when Hillary shines through the slings and arrows, the daggers and the stones, overcoming the skepticism that she must shield herself with in order to be available and prepared on the open field.

So I ask, what was the question the Rabbi posed?

He talked about a saying that everyone has "two pockets." I don't remember how he described the first pocket, but it was the pocket of human ego, to paraphrase. The other pocket was the knowledge that we are all "dust and ashes." (I think that's what he said.) So how do you balance those two pockets? Having enough ego to accomplish important things, while also having humility?

The question gave her a chance to talk about her spirituality, and I think it showed a very warm, thoughtful side that many voters never see.

It reminded me of seeing her when she addresses church groups. In particular I remember hearing her talking to the South Carolina church that had struggled through a terrible shooting. And listening to her, she sounded -- in a perfectly natural way -- like one of the young, liberal, idealistic nuns that taught me in high school.
