Does anyone use a Time Capsule drive? Does anyone use a non Apple network drive for Time Machine?

I have a 1T Seagate GoFlex drive and a 2T WD MyBook drive. Both connect directly to the network, both run their own proprietary software, both claim to be Time Machine compatible.

Both have run TM backups perfectly fine . . . . until they don't.

After these two experiences, we are contemplating an Apple Time Capsule . . . . . but are hoping there is a foolproof alternative.

Dunno about 'directly to the network,' but direct FireWire or USB connections should work fine.

. . . . for the laptops and a remote iMac. It isn't practical to have directly connected drives for those three.

Do you also use the Time Capsule as a wireless access point?

I still use the time capsule for its wifi, but when the hard drive began to have issues, it was easier to use the iomega.
