I hope we don't get it for a long time, the people I have to support will have a nightmare trying to get work done.

(12,958 posts)This would be a nightmare for us at work. We are already up to our nostrils supporting win 7 and XP and we know those OS inside and out, like the backs of our hands.

(6,354 posts)I may have to.... LOL.... I will HAVE to go back and review again, but there were some very helpful tips in the updated (non rant) video.
I'm getting ready to head out for the night and may start a new thread tomorrow... anybody using Skype for Windows 8? I can't for the life of me figure out how to answer a GD call... I keep hanging up on my (86yo) Mom!! So I thought I'd uninstall this version of Skype and go back to the previous version... but when I finally figured out how to get to the "Unistall" page, Skype wasn't even listed as one of the programs!
This Windows 8 stuff is driving me nuts!!!

(21,126 posts)You may have to turn it off as a feature rather than uninstall it. I don't know enough about 8.

(84,711 posts)I found this an excellent watch to follow up on what SFP posted for those who KNOW their FAGE is "WIN 8" ....(no matter HOW MUCH they PROTEST)...it kind of gets you used to it.
I'll try to get the second one up when I can find it.

(84,711 posts)But...they had to "Go for Broke" to compete against APPLE and other Systems. Their ASS IS ON THE LINE.
Sad...that this is the best they could do...but, at least they are "getting it" and given that most "BUSINESS/TRADING/WALL STREET Computers USE "WINDOWS"....they Might actually succeed? We shouldn't count them out. But, what a CRAP Introduction that I might have to move to APPLE to AVOID at all costs. I Love "WIN ME" and have "WIN 7" on my Notebook. BUT...I use Firefox/Thunderbird/Bing for what I can. I am an old Netscape Diehard...and never could find some friendliness from Microsoft except for the "Basic Framework." It's going to be so hard for me to transition to "Win 8" that I will be forced on to APPLE.

SleeplessinSoCal
(9,110 posts)I've got this dead laptop that I normally use all day every day. Now I'm shopping around and am really frightened of how Microsoft has made Windows 8 much more friendly to only their products compared to Windows 7.
I think I want an Asus or a Sony Vaio. But I want my contents including Word & Windows Live Mail and all my software from my old hp pavilion installed in the new pc. Is that even possible?
RC
(25,592 posts)As for any data, it helps to have the old computer working.
Is the old laptop dead, dead? Or is it the hard drive?
SleeplessinSoCal
(9,110 posts)Or so I've been told. It just went to sleep, wouldn't wake up. 3 times in 4-5 months. The lights on the keyboard are on, but nothing on the screen. I paid $200 for a "new graphics card" and then got free fixes the 2nd and 3rd time it wouldn't wake up. I also now think the fan had stopped working. Maybe that kept killing off the graphics card.
I keep looking at the Windows 8 around town and realize I can't begin to deal with it until after the holidays. It would make me crazy(er). I could get a Dell laptop with Windows 7 directly from Dell. I may do that - if it's still available.

(37,457 posts)1- Unpin as much on the starting screen as you can, except for Desktop
2- Make shortcuts on the Taskbar for Start Menu, Desktop and Control Panel.
Once you are in the "Desktop application", it's pretty much just like Windows 7. You won't have to *** with that ghastly Metro interface.
Rumor has it that Windows 9 will totally do away with the desktop. I think that's a huge mistake for M$.
Aerows
(39,961 posts)I had to go to fucking win+x, run and type wordpad to find a damn text editor. That's just wrong.
steve2470
(37,457 posts)1- Put shortcut for Start Menu on taskbar
2- click the shortcut
3- Programs
4- Windows Accessories
5- Wordpad
6- For Notepad, you can put a shortcut on taskbar
I know most people hate Windows 8. Definitely not trying to sell it to anyone.
eta: You can put a shortcut for Wordpad on the taskbar too, derp.
Aerows
(39,961 posts)Thanks for the advice. It's annoying the hell out of me at present, as my rant probably reveals. I've been using computers since DOS 3.0, and frankly, this is more annoying than the transition from Windows 3.1 to Windows 95 original edition.

(39,961 posts)Because so far, I've done my best to say "It's not awful", but it pisses me off more every day. I know about win+x to get a fucking normal access to device manager and control panel.
I have to go to freaking run and type wordpad because I can't fucking find it. Now is that sad, or what?
I know about win+f to get to my damn files. But why in the fuck can't I just have a damn button? I can't find half of my shit, and half of the shit I CAN find through the godawful interface, I don't want.
I'm THIS close to wiping it and installing Windows 7. I'm going to try one of the "bring back the start button" open source apps, because if I don't, I'm liable to at some point shriek in pain, pull my eyeballs out and chuck the fucker out of the window.
I have TRIED to be game about it. But 2 days later, even after using the desktop and blah blah blah, I hate this mess called Metro. It's about as useful as dogshit.
I had to go to win+x run and type wordpad or notepad to find the motherfucking text editor that has been on every fucking OS - Linux, Mac and Windows, imaginable in some iteration or another. If I have to sit and type commands, just to get NORMAL shit to work, I may as well just head on back to DOS, because I still know all of those commands. It's annoying. I know how. It just adds a level of annoyance.

I'm wondering if it might work better with a touch screen, something I have at present.
However, given MS's long history of alternating a good OS with a total bow-wow, I'm going to save my money.

(8,377 posts)like what you are familiar with. All this other crap is to try to make the OS feel like a cell phone.
Why anybody would want their desktop to feel like a cell phone is a complete mystery to me.

(84,711 posts)for Businesses to convert to that is probably a huge over-reach. Too many "clicks" and repositioning for Corporations and Small Business who need to do word processing and have the system they are used to using easy to find to get mail, letters, documents, business statements, etc. out there and aren't looking for "Gaming, Music, Web Photos, Weather, or other I-Pad kind of Stuff because they are trying to deal with CUSTOMERS in BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT and doing BUSINESS WORK... WTF were they thinking. They should have come out with their own Damned I-Pad for that Crowd and left their Business Customers with Win ME or 7!
