Rare White Wolf in Yellowstone Park Euthanized Over Injuries

I remember her, she was one of the original alpha female white wolves of the Canyon Pack

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. (AP) — One of only three white wolves roaming Yellowstone National Park has been put down by park staff after it was found with severe injuries.

P.J. White of the National Park Service says hikers found the female wolf Tuesday on the north side of the park.

White says the wolf was in shock and dying, leading to the decision to euthanize it and investigate what caused the injuries. The nature of the animal's injuries could not immediately be determined.

The predator was one of three known white wolves in the park.

It had lived to 12 years old, twice the age of an average wolf in the park, and was one of the most recognizable and sought after to view and photograph by park visitors.

I was trying to find out where she ended up last fall. She had a bad limp from an injured front paw a couple years ago, I was concerned she might not last the winter that year. She was a cool wolf, her mate was all black. I watcher them swim across the Yellowstone River in Hayden Valley a long time ago and took many pictures of her that I used in many public talks about wolves. I think she brought off eight litters, which is quite a few with the same mate. They were old and I wonder where her mate is. They had a pretty good life, wild wolves usually last about 6 years.

I had no idea. I saw her once, was unforgettable. She was sharing a kill.

Also the whole story of the reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone and their impact is incredible to me.

It's good to see how many people are in favor of the reintroduction. I was before, during and ever since. They are amazing beings and I live in a place where my chances of seeing one are pretty good depending on where I go within ten miles of home. I wish people didn't have a hate on for them like some do, they really are an important species to have around.
