update on the selling of our Door County property...

We have had the pleasant surprise that hubby's niece is buying it! Hubby co-owns it with his sister (with whom he does not speak) and the niece is a lovely person. Her husband is a firefighter in Madison.

Hubby accepted her offer which was a little lower than he hoped to get but when you account for not having a commission fee, nor the updates/repairs/replacement of on the property it works out well, both financially and "hassle" wise.

She emailed him with the info that she has the financial stuff all worked out but not the legal transfer of the property. They' re going to Aruba for a week and won't be back until mid-April.
I expect it all will be wrapped up by the end of April.

I'm relieved, but a little sad. I used to love going to the symphony season and eating a fish fries. Plus, we have enjoyed great neighbors who are still there. Hubby's niece has befriended them and were impressed by their warmth.

Oh, and there is a psychological advantage to having the property stay in the family...

2. It is pleasant and lovely there in the summer. A nice place to relax in.

And they have delightful taverns where you can get some great beer...

3. My Mom last year sold her house in Oconto county.

We all have lots of memories, almost all good ones.

Fishing in the lake there, swimming in Boot Lake, but Mom's finances and health weren't up to keeping the property by herself.

4. Well, we have financial woes and some health issues. Hubby's spinal stenosis makes it hard for

him to navigate the Door County house.

Travel to and from there and CT was very wearying. It was practically a day long with plane changes and waits in airports plus the long drive from the airport to the house...

From my house to Paris or Rome was an easier trip because you could take a night flight and sleep and wake up and there you are...

11. Oh, I think it will be. We estimate that the closing will happen immediately after his niece

returns from Aruba. There will be papers for hubby to sign and the check will be forthcoming.

We will miss our neighbors there. Lovely people who were always so helpful and nice. And good, strong liberal Dems also. There was some serious friction with my sister in law's husband, who was strong Republican and a real jerk, but he has passed away so that is a closed chapter.

Door County will always have a special place in my heart...

We are going back in August, I think. That will be the 5th trip in 6 years.

6. do you ever go during the symphony series in Ephraim?

Ephraim is a picturesesque town that is alas, completely dry...not a drop of alcohol...

7. When is that? I'm trying to place Ephraim and what we do there.

We always try to go to at least one of the plays...usually, two.

I'd love the symphony.

8. Hubby just corrected me: symphony is located in a high school in Fish Creek and it runs

the first 3 weeks in August. What is great about that symphony series is that the musicians are all from the wonderful Chicago symphony who vacation there. So you have musicians from arguably the greatest symphony orchestra in the U.S.

I still need to rent a house. I had a list saved for the others to choose, but gmail deleted it. Now, I have to start over.

I will definitely look into that.

Last time, we stayed in a darling cottage in Fish Creek, but it was suited more for 5 people. We will only have 3, this time. I just had eye surgery, so my time on the computer is limited. Thanks for the info.

12. So glad to hear your good news. We've gone to Door County

every summer for almost 40 years! My husband much longer. We had close friends who actually lived in Ephriam, and a friend who worked at the White Gull in Fish Creek for years, and then at Wilson's in Ephriam for almost 15 years. Our daughter scooped ice cream with her fiance at Wilson's when in college, and stayed at his family cottage on Kangaroo Lake.

I can't imagine summer without Door County, although we no longer have places to crash for free! We have to stay at a hotel these days like common tourists, or just drive home in the evening (an easy 2 hour drive), LOL!

Oddly, in all that time we've never gone to the symphony at the high school, but we have gone to hear Irish groups and to a fabulous concert featuring Allison Krause!
