Former Onalaska church secretary embezzled $832,000 for gambling

A Salem woman has been convicted of embezzling about $832,000 from an Onalaska church where had worked as secretary and clerk for years, and spending it on gambling.

Barbara L. Snyder, 59, of Salem, pleaded guilty on Friday to counts of wire fraud and filing a false income tax return, both in federal court in Madison, according to the U.S. attorney's office for the Western District of Wisconsin.

Between 2006 and 2015, Snyder took the money from collections at St. Patrick Catholic Church, To avoid detection, she destroyed collection records, made false accounting entries and lied to auditors, according to prosecutors.

Snyder pleaded guilty to the charges on Aug. 25. She faces possible maximum prison terms of 20 years for wire fraud and 3 years on the tax charge when she is sentenced Nov. 9 before U.S. District Judge James Peterson.
