Judi Rhodes, the campaign treasurer for Senate President Mike Ellis, has resigned, saying she never would have set up the illegal "super PAC" that Ellis describes in a secretly made videotape.

On Wednesday, Project Veritas, a conservative group known for its secret videos, released a tape of Ellis, R-Neenah, discussing plans to raise $400,000 to $500,000 for a political-action committee that would attack his Democratic opponent for Senate but appear to be independent.

In a statement, Ellis -- who has called such groups a "cancer" on the political system -- said he discovered after the video was shot that having a candidate set up an ostensibly independent PAC to work on his behalf would be illegal.

Rhodes issued her own statement, resigning from Ellis' campaign.

"I have never set up any 'Super PAC' nor have I had any intention of doing so nor have I ever had any conversation with Senator Ellis about it," Rhodes said. "I will not work for any committee that would imply that I would improperly do so. I have terminated my contract with the Ellis to Madison Committee."
